Suggest me a recording software

    Hello,

    So I googled on what's available and tried numerous softwares but none meets my specific need.

    I want to record lossless audio from my soundcard playing in my browser. Now there are numerous apps to accomplish this but with two specific issues:

    1. They have no way to detect the incoming signal thus start and stop automatically and when playlist moves to next track, start recording another track. This way I don't have to start and stop manually with every song in playlist and also the time length of the source files will match with recorded files.

    2, They just record "what I hear" instead they should be able to record the signal from the soundcard even if I have my volume muted. This way I get the proper loudness matching the source file.

    Now I know there's audacity but for the first problem (1) sometimes it starts and stops with the incoming signal other times don't, I don't know what's effecting it's behaviour.

    Plus when the new track starts, it doesn't automatically create a new file and start recording.

    Also, there's no predifined actions, like after recording is complete, save the tracks automatically in the specified folder etc.

    Do any of you know any recording software utilizing WASAPI that has these features.

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I think you should be looking into a stream ripper or downloader program, rather than a "recording" software per se.

    An internet utility program vs an audio editor or daw. hth

    Hi, thank you for the response. This is not just about streaming/downloading, I also want to be able to record the audio from my Games.

    Write to Silicon Valley (USA) or other software manufacturers and describe
    your problem, maybe someone will invent something like that.

    You want various things that possibly can't be done with one software alone.
    This software can record based on an incoming signal. I don't know if it creates a new file for every recording:

    If not there's software available that can split one file in to several, based on length of white space.
    The always recording feature - regardless of muted speakers - can be achieved with routing.

    1. Every halfway decent audio editor with silence detection, like Audacity's Silence Finder. Record the stream as a whole and split it afterwards.
    2. This doesn't work this way without advanced routing capabilities. If you mute a channel, you cannot record it from the sound card. Instead, connect playback and record software with a virtual cable. There are various implementations: VAC, VB-CABLE, JACK, win-capture-audio for OBS, etc.

    Why do you need lossless quality? I mean, what you hear in your browser has high chances of NOT being lossless. And why would you need lossless sound capture from games?
    Of course you can do it just because. But to me, in this particular case, is a waste of storage space.

    get a daw, get loopback, and set the input of the daw to be the output of loop back and then export the recording?

    That's exactly what I needed. I've found an app that triggers recording upon a certain level of sound and then stops by itself and create another file for the next track.

    And the issue with the loudness levels is sorted by the virtual cables. So these two things combined pretty much does it for me. Just one mor thing if I could do with the recorded tracks. Is there any way to calculate the leading and trailing silence from some reference track and insert it into my recorded track ? I'm sure this is doable, I just don't know how.

    Hi Olaf. Yes you're right, that can be done but it's a bit complicated for someone not versed in audacity. I look for the tutorials on the web and attempt to do it and see if I can get it working.

    Your suggestion about virtual cable as also suggested by boomoperator works 100%. Thanks mate.

    Okay so I tried it and encountered a nasty bug in naming module. No matter what syntax I chose for naming and even I completely turn of automatic naming, I always end up with ".wav" (no filename) it splits the tracks fine and move on the next track, so far so good but when the next track finishes it again saves it as ".wav" overriding the previous file so the previous recorded track is lost.

    I have written to their support describing the problem, lets see if they are keen on solving it.

    This app is preferable compared to Gilisoft Recorder as it has small disk footprint and more imporatntly doesn't resmaple the audio. Now only if the devs sort out that naming bug.

    Thank you for this suggestion @phumb-reh I'm def going to use it.

    Why not? I love my music and I intend to save it even after I'm gone. Lossless is the only option to archive the audio related stuff as it can be used as a source to encode whatever you like it. With times and tech changing, playback habits change too. I use to encode everything in MP3 V0 but I dumped it for AAC 256K. Who knows what codecs/encodres and quality is preferable, affordable and manageable.

    Yes, that's essentially I'm trying to do with audacity and virtual cables. I just have to figure out a way to match the length of the tracks with that of the source. Thanks for the input @madbuzzin

    this is an old way of thinking, I remember this from old days of recording our live gigs using physical MiniDisc rack,

    if you want to record "what you hear" it's already not lossless as the audio interface "cripples" it randomly (most likely even processing it via your soundcard always-on EQ corrections, limiting, samplerate conversion, bit depth conversion etc..), depending on your audio interface choice, something like internal-DSP hardware Loopback provided within RME interfaces TotalMix FX is closest to what you seek,

    any decent DAW nowadays has "trim silence" feature,
    you can use something like Reaper and do automatic cuts on recorded material as a whole in the post-production process - it has tons of custom Actions as well as Render Matrix,

    on a side note, can't you just obtain game soundtracks on the internets?

    you sure what comes out of your browser is lossless ? :unsure:

    recording a "mp3 online player" in lossless on your pc doesnt make the result lossless per say.

    so i guess that even the microsoft recorder is enough (SoundRecorder.exe)

    Edit :
    usually you can find those files in the game. If not in media form, maybe there is a tool to convert them from "asset" (?) to media file.
