Always remember - that data can be lost, always make a backup of the important files, for example burn to a DVD or to a good USB stick. Or to the cloud such as: Sign up now for MEGA and get 20 GB of online storage - for free (https://mega.io/start).

I guess about 300MB/s. What USB standard do you have? USB 3? Is the hard disk fixed? How old is your laptop?

on the screen where it said automatic repair, your pc did not start correctly,i clicked on advanced options, troubleshoot, startup settings, restart, and then in the startup settings screen that appears i pressed number 7 disable driver signature enforcement
i wasnt expecting much,so went away from the pc,as i had tried other things this morning to no avail.

If you have a Samsung SSD hard drive, you can use the free "Samsung Magician". It is from the manufacturer and helps a lot.

    Samsung Magician
    https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/magician/
    Download
    https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/support/tools/

    Drive Health & TBW Check
Create an instant diagnostic of your drive, including Total Bytes Written, to assess the overall health of your SSD.

    SSD Authenticity Check
Check the authenticity of your Samsung SSD, which is characterized by high performance and reliability.

    S.M.A.R.T Check
Check your SSD with S.M.A.R.T. Check to detect possible drive failures before they lead to failure.

First, you should back up your entire disk as soon as possible, only then can you perform any operations on that disk.
Check the S.M.A.R.T of this disk in the first place, then you will find out if it is a hardware or software problem.
PS. Do not use HDD Regenerator because it will kill your HDD completely,
use MHDD instead, there you can check the disk's S.M.A.R.T and remap it :hifive:

HDD Regenerator revived my disk with NO file table at all.
It really works BUT it is "intensive".

Every access on a dying disk can kill the disk.

So YES the first thing to do is a backup if data is important.
    When possible of course ...

But the thread started with someone just wanting to know WHY hdd was not working.
    Completely different problem

For urgent backup on dying disk, this is the best option on Win system :
    https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/

It is a binary copy. so everything is copied without error stop.

After that, you can do a refresh with MHDD or HDD Regenerator.
And do ANOTHER raw binary backup.

Windows has its own service, you don't need any external programs:

    chkdsk
Checks the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical and physical errors. When used without parameters, chkdsk only displays the status of the volume and does not fix errors. When used with the /f, /r, /x, or /b parameters, it fixes errors on the volume.

man, I put this here for all to know, I had the same thing basically last week, for a month I had troubles installing stuff but last week it was such a disaster, time consuming and lots of nerves; got it clean with air from the dust, it wasnt much but doubts came to mind but no... cant remember the number of how many times ive changed the settings in BIOS, without any result ...it was crashing like hell even opening and navigating with firefox after some time BAM! ...but the most obvious crash I always had, navigating thru windows new UI: instant crash!

I had come to the conclusion it was a hardware problem like you, and blamed the video card, after that I went and installed the latest driver like four times, nothing; in the end to do a full install of it because the driver software wants a "container" (NVidia Container bulshit) and display container, the PC wanted that sh*t installed ...so in order to get it sorted out I did and install i never made, the installer gives always two options, I always choose just the driver; anyway after installing in the way they want because you have to fill the hdd with their bullshift ive managed to get it done ...id say F*CK nvidia!

so now all working well with two times NVDisplay.Container.exe in task manager from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvmdig.inf_amd64_1f4f13287900d9b3\Display.NvContainer

I always install everything with default options on (one does never know what DLLs are neede or are a prerequisite...). and then begin to drop unwanted sh*t afterwards. :guru:

IDK whether you have the nerve to try anything else but in case ... try to disable the NVIDIA service in the service manager. Its not really needed in normal working situations.
Disabling always worked for me, maybe you give it a try. :dunno:

But I think you must use chkdsk with fix /f parameter without Windows running because chkdsk blocks hdd access while running.
So you need to initiate directly after booting don't you?

p.s.: For the system drive you are asked to initiate the chkdsk command at next boot time. But be careful this may take quite a while on big disks.
Better to run the chkdsk without /f first and only if errors are found use the boot time option when asked with chkdsk C: /f

    I have old eyes and didn't see the " (Y/N) " in your post.
Running chkdsk regularly is definitely a good idea. :like:

However, a tip: If you check a large harddisk @ boottime, it can really take a loooooong time (it took me >30 min for a medium sized server HDD last time I did it). It is therefore useful to test the disk first without the /f switch and to trigger the correction only if errors occur.

    Good tip!
Hi twoheart, do you remember Y/N, but the Y was a Z on the keyboard? The devil is in the details. I used to like to do the disk check (cluster by cluster) at night because it took hours. The hammer was when you used "Data Removal: Darik's Boot and Nuke - DBAN" https://dban.org and overwrite the harddisk before it went to the trash, according to NSA standards.
