As soon as we have a winner in Part 1, I'll link to the stems here.

These are the terms and conditions:
    • Only old analogue channel emulations (like API or Neve) and channels which are not emulating a specific hardware (like Kush Audio Blyss) are allowed and only one kind, (tape to be announced - depends on Part 1 poll).
    • Apart from sparse FX, no additional plugins are allowed.
    • Only a bit of automation is allowed, basically what can be done in realtime, manually.

Prerequisite are stepped frequencies and no variable Q (a switch between too wide and much too wide would be ok though [IMG]).

UPDATE 2: Since these rules seem to cause some confusion, I've made a small (and incomplete) list in alphabetical order with
    • Kush Audio:
      - Blyss
    • Plugin Alliance:
      - Lindell 50 Series,
      - Lindell 80 Series
    • Softube:
      - American or British Class A
    • Soundevice:
      - UniChannel
    • Waves:
      - Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain,
      - API EQs (one of 550A, 550B, 560) plus API 2500,
      - EMI TG12345 Channel Strip,
      - Kramer HLS Channel plus Kramer PIE Compressor,
      - V-Series (V-EQ3 or V-EQ4) plus V-Comp

You are allowed to use the channel strip in the mainout and even twice per channel, since you can basically patch one channel to another (been there, done that).

You'll need to upload your mix to a permanent link here (goes without saying).

You can mention the channel strip you used straight away or reveal it later.

I will add a poll for the tracks here.

UPDATE 1: I think we can announce the winners of Part 1
    1. With overwhelming majority 'With tape emu'
    2. 'Acoustic' Rock
    [IMG]

Terms and conditions for usage of tape emulation:

    • For all audio stems tape first, then channel strip.
    • No tape for subgroups, folders, busses, send returns, ...
    • In main out channel strip first, then tape emu.
And finally here are the stems to I'm alright by Angels in Amplifiers.

Give your best and have fun.

And don't forget, if there are any indications that additional plugins have been used, all your warez will be terminated.

UPDATE 3: final poll and link to a player with all mixes

Considering this is a **mixing** event, we need to choose other fx aswel. To my mind come:
    - delays
    - reverbs
    - limiters
    - mastering eqs(s)

Maybe even just submit mono mixes for that real authenticity. Who needs stereo?

With sparse FX I'm meaning, no digital anything, no limiters, no additional compressors, no mastering EQs,...
Maybe two of reverb, delay, chorus but that should be it.

I like the concept but it's gonna a pain in the a** to enforce, if not impossible.

It's probably easier to negate categories and let instances be as per user willingness.

I'm not (en)forcing anything or anyone. This contest is about mixing like in the 60s with limited options and for fun, simple as that. You just need one vintage channel strip, one reverb, one delay and can participate. It's basically a easy as it can get, IMHO.

My hands are itching already. Mainly because I wanna see what I'm capable of without my trusty FabFilters and in an alien genre (since acoustic poop seems to be winning the poll).
I haven't settled on a strip yet tho. Does Softube American Class A count?

This is exactly what this contest is about, the challenge and the fun.

And yes, American Class A (or British Class A) are good examples of what I'm talking about.

:woot: 2'' tape of course. [IMG]

    No, choose whatever you want.

TBH, I don't know if a complete song is attachable. @Olymoon, is there any option to do this?

If only "oldschool" channelstrips are allowed, I guess we should also limit the use of reverb, delay and modulation to oldschool type of effects. For example (reverb): only spring / plate / chamber or early EMT type digital reverb.

    What do you think?

Since room, stage, hall, studio IR reverbs could be used...

Just wondering if you want the mix to sound vintage or modern.

Why no electric guitar rock. It seams like this type of music has been popular for quite a while.

While this is intriguing and I wish you the best, I started using a MCI automated console, 2" tape and lexicon digital reverb in the early 70s. Maybe we could have a contest using a limited set of plugins ie. 1 channel strip, 1 basic Delay and something like a lexicon 224.

And we can't forget all of the tape machine tricks we used to use, ohhh I forgot everything's plugged in now.

Good luck and have fun everyone.

I don't think you can make a modern sound with vintage channel strips only, they're just too limited.

Oh, I forgot to mention this here too, thanks.

According to Part 1 it looks like the majority votes for the use of tape emus.

That one is branded as mastering EQ though.
