The best VST synth for lead is the one you are able to handle and use the best.

Any modern VST synth enables you to design lead sound.

I recommend you choose an industry standart VST synth and learn it in depth.

I would choose a VST synth that has the wavetable function. It is called "Wavetable synthesis" . You can start from Serum since there are tons of free tutorials on Youtube.

Edit: Don't confine yourself to presets, but try to learn, at least, basic sound design techniques.

The ones you know, like and layer.

There are shitloads of presets for Sylenth1, Spire, Serum, Surge, Sismololimx, sossollsosVST5000, etc.

I like Serum because it's pretty easy to use, easy to do sound design in (imo), and there are a billion great presets available on the sister site for it that suit a lot of different genres. It can sound great for leads, or pads, or arps, or even drums and other things.

Really though, I agree with @TranceDream - don't confine yourself. You could pick almost any synth and easily use just that one synth to build most of your track. My point on that is that no synth is going to hinder you from making EDM. That will fall on your brain/creativity/abilities, I'd say. Just sit down and play around and see which one is easiest for you to understand and work with. @TranceDream gave good advice. Pick one, learn it well, and you can do a lot with it.

These synths will give a broad selection of presets to buy, including factory presets that come with the synth. The synths have distinctive sound /feel, so check them out and get a sense of how to suit your sound.

In EDM, it comes down to layering 2-4 leads / pluck to get a distinctive sound that pops out. In the end, almost every synth will give you good leads, bass, plucks, and pad. It comes down to how you layer them, mix/eq, and what sounds you layer to create something impactful.

Any good known synth will always have a wide collection of presets avaliable to use. (E.g. Spire, Sylenth1, Dune 3, or Serum)

 

Exactly ArticStorm the Discovery sound is not the hit and it is anything but an exact emulation.
The Synth 1 however comes a bit closer to the original and it's free.

I just meant something like the above. I didn't mean a direct emulation, sorry. I just meant something you can make that crisp sounding lead that is popular in some styles.
