been a minute since I have made other than zips also. but crossover, really? seems excessive when you can just use command line.

    https://www.keka.io/en/ Does not compress (easily)?

    rar lab options:
    RAR 6.12 for macOS x64
    RAR 6.12 for macOS ARM
How to create a RAR file on Mac?
    1. In Terminal, type the "cd" command and navigate to the folder with the files you'd like to RAR. Drag and drop them into Terminal.
    2. To create a RAR file, use the command "rar a [NAME OF RAR ARCHIVE]".
    3. Press Enter and wait for a couple of minutes until your RAR is created.

Keka works just fine and in macOS you can define your own automation to right click a folder and run a command line at the current folder so you can easily create rars, isos, dmgs...

I use keka often. These are the only options I have for compressing. No rar, unfortunately

BetterZip or Archiver can create rar archives.(rar executable required from RarLab)

tzzsmk's suggestion to use 7z instead is winner, anyway.
You can create smaller archives than with rar.

You still need to grab and install rar from rarlabs, and the info you link uses Keka unsandboxed for everything then just so it uses your rar cli anyway. I'd still rather just use command line/terminal once in a great while, than do this.

I used to rely on virtual machines and CrossOver for compressing .rar files on my Mac too, but I found a simpler way that saved me a ton of hassle. I found a tool that lets you open rar on mac directly without needing extra software. It's been a game-changer for me, honestly. I was getting tired of setting up virtual machines for something so simple, and this method just works seamlessly. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s much quicker and cleaner than juggling multiple systems.
