Reaper is excellent for what you want, and its free to use (just a startup nag screen) and is also cheap to actually buy it

Studio1 also another good choice, again has a free version to get you going

FLStudio, VST's work fine and FL make some excellent vsts. You can also record real instruments into it, you need to think about how you get your instruments into your DAW, so maybe look at that

For almost half the price of Cubase 7.5, you can't miss the Studio One Pro, also if you're a newbie, this daw got everything by drag&drop, in your face and more intuitive, learning it easly. You can check the free version if you want to make sure if it suits you).

Cubase company invented VST. So Cubase or Nuendo would be more suitable.

    Can't tell, sorry..
I use FL Studio for all this (VST/recording)...

FL's way of recording audio is not the most intuitive out there, but it can do the job... Of course I'm not talking about recording a live orchestra...

I do agree Andrew & SirSillySausage....
Reaper is the dope, from the creator of Winamp.
I 've started working with it about 2 years ago and through years, it becomes an amazing tool for composition with vst's and recording.
    +1 for REAPER

Each DAW excels in something and/or is better suited for different people's idiosyncrasies.

So the best idea could be to download the free versions of the most popular ones like Reaper, Ableton Live, Presonus Studio One and probably some more sophisticated like Magix Samplitude or more simple like MuLab, and try them. Get the "feel" hands on.

Working with each one of them for a few days you'll find out which is more suited for your needs, your style.

    My 2 cents

    Good luck!

Best DAW in being easy to learn, being very creative and producing very fast and which has a lot of tutorials everywhere is Ableton Live. ITs also very good in performing live on stage.

    Check these Videos.

Oh, really? I saw people stepping from FL Studio to Ableton Live and they was complaining about the "first look" being less intuitive for them, calling it "alien-like" interface or driving a spaceship after they driven a car. For me, because i used to work with FL Studio in the past too, but also with Studio One and Cubase, it was easier for me to learn Ableton live but i was more experienced when i checked it. I know there's alot of tutorials out there for Ableton, but there's also alot of tutorials for Studio One too. He can write on youtube just "Studio One tutorial" and he will find anything.
Also Folder Editing, Track Transform, included Melodyne, Drag&Drop and essential parameters like FileTempo/Transpose/Timestretch/Tune are right in your face after you right-click any particular sample/loop. Also comping is so fast, doing it only by selecting with the click of the mouse the favorite region of the layer and it's automatically highlighted.
Also if he click any parameter on the GUI of any 3rd party plugin/synth/vsti, a little hand icon will appear in the info-panel located above in the left corner of the S1's interface and he can drag that hand icon to that particular track where he loaded the effect/vsti and the automation lane of that parameter is automatically created and you can just start writing your automation, with no headache.
