Already is popular. No you dont need to learn it unless you're doing movies or mixing music for clients that want to cater to audiophiles with multi channel systems. My opinion is Atmos is cool like any other surround format when done right for movies & video games, but means nothing to me when I want to listen to music....

    - Forgot to mention, you can mix ATMOS with spatial audio for headphones too which is kinda fun.

Atmos is now for the everyday folk as most people that are listening to Atmos, are doing so on phones & earbuds thanks to streaming services.

it's just a marketing gimmick, really,
fine trickery to push home users into buying shitload of speakers into their already acoustically untreated crippled rooms,
refurbish old music by slapping Atmos sticker on it, people will still use cheap-ass earbuds most of the time, or some not-even-stereo portable sound cubes,
annoyance and expense for mixing engineers who already know 5.1 and other surround mixing and now they need to replace their audio interfaces, consoles, DAWs, plugins etc...
there's been thread on Dolby Atmos support in Reaper about 5 years ago, and after all that time, Atmos hasn't become the big thing anyway,
being proprietary closed standard, it's just another money sinkhole, future lies in open-source standards which Dolby Atmos abolutely is not,
there's literally nothing great about Atmos except Dolby gets money

Think of Atmos as a synonym for surround sound. It's not entirely correct, since there are other implementations, but when you go to cinema you're probably listening to Atmos.
Also there's a consumer-grade psychoacoustic binaural trickery under the same brand. DearVR might help you to achieve similar results if you would ever want that for some reason.
