Shure 58 or cad gxl2200 for record voice?

    Hey guys!
    Well, I have this dilemma, a while ago.

    I always use the Shure 58 to sing live, and the CAD condenser to record at home on the Daw.
    Since they always told me "Dinamic is for live Condenser to record"

    But seeing that some people have used this great and epic microphone ( Shure 58) to record "songs". I wonder... why not?
    My doubt starts from my perception of sound, which may be deceiving me, that's why I come to ask you.

    I feel that the CAD adds a brightness to the voice, which is not wanted. But of course, it's a condenser and, in a certain way, the voice has more presence" (in a certain way).
    But I notice that the shure 58 is more realistic (always compared to the CAD) I notice that my voice is more similar to the shure. But with the shure I have less presence in the voice, it gives me the feeling that it lacks treble.

    But as I said before, maybe my perception is wrong.

    What do you think?. I mean, it seems to me that the CAD is a low-end mic and I think the shure outperforms it despite being dynamic.
    Which one do you think I should use to record the vocals?

    I would try both, being careful to avoid phasing, and mix them to my liking.
    Put one 3 times back the distance of the other and see how they sound.
    Then reverse them and try that.
    There are no rules, whatever sounds best to you :wink:

    If you feel each one has it's own advantages and none of them straight out suck, i think you should go with what each production needs specifically. For example you say the CAD adds brightness, but are you sure you wouldn't add brightness anyway on the mix later on if you used the 58? Does that extra brightness of the CAD actually help that specific mix, even if on it's own is "not desireable"?

    Or you know, use both since you have them, then keep the track that fits better or blend them.

    pure BS. the shure sm58 is an excellent all-arounder if you consider that it can be used for acoustic untreated rooms (which is most likely your case), and tends to keep up with a different range of vocals, thanks to be a dynamic mic...

    long story short, out of those 2 mics, the sm58 is the perfect start. once you progress more, you might be able to buy something else

    a sm58 would be more useful live in most scenarios. they are great with loud sources and anything you use live/gig with is going to get beat up mercilessly. the sm58 is one of the most indestructible mics you can get. That part about his "rule of thumb" is not BS at all. It's why the SM58 is so popular. cost, durability, and decent results.

    Choosing a microphone depends on the age of the singer, in fact the name says it:

    SM58 = singer has to be 58yo
    U47 = 47yo
    U87 = 87yo

    and so on

    Try recording with both at the same time. Direct voice more into the 58 (since it's a dynamic)

    I recently read in an article that Daniel Lanois used an SM58 to record Bono`s vocals for both Joshua Tree and Achtung baby .... just sayin`

    One of my clients uses SE2200. Should I be worried? :)

    You better be: those mic numbers never lie

    Courtney love was born in 1964 (age 58), now take a look at her Shure mic…

    I'd use a SM7B over a SM58
