    Hi everyone,

I'm installing my home studio from 0. My next step is choosing a DAW. I use windows 10 64 bits.

I'm sharing with you my priorities so you better help me choosing the right DAW (for me):

    - First, the DAW must allow me to make all general purpose operations. I guess every DAW is able to do so (working with samples, vst's, midi, effects, mixing, mastering...). But this is my guess, may be there are critical differentes that I'm not aware of. If there is any, please let me know

    - Second (this may seem simple, but for me it's a high priority issue): how the DAW allows you to order your vsts. This is what I'd like: I'd like to install 64 vst2 or vst3 plugins in default installation folders - then create shortcuts to these vsts in a separate folder, organized in subfolders (this way I'll be able to have shortcuts to the same vst in 2 or more different folders, for instance, kontakt could be in subfolder MIXING and in subfolder INSTRUMENTS). I could rename the vst's shortcuts according to my needs too.

I'd like to configure the DAW so it reads the vsts from this shortcuts folder, so when I open the DAW, I'd like to see the same structures/names I have in the shortcuts folder. Is this a dream or there is DAW that allows this way of organizing the vsts?

here is a list of all which come to my mind:

    - REAPER
    - Ableton Live
    - FL Studio
    - Bandlab (aka Sonar)
    - Cubase
    - Nuendo
    - Bitwig
    - Pro Tools
    - Reason
    - Logic Pro (macOS only :feelssadman:) )
    - Renoise (tracker)
    - Studio One

Those are the main DAWs for windows, those have different disadvantages and advantages and they support different workflow philosophies.
Asking here about a DAW, will always lead in some kind of DAW war and people pushing DAW they are confortable enough with.

I advise you to test a few after you read about them. This will take some time, but will also enable you to get as much as you want from the DAW you choose. Have fun.

Fl Studio allows you to organize your VSTs in different categories as you mentioned.

Studio One. Just install everything normally then organize your VSTs into folders and subfolders in the Browser.

That's what I have done also. Very useful.

    hello,
why install the vst in their default folder?install them in the folders that you want and that you make!
my tree is: one folder called VST in the C:\ program files with inside two folders called INSTRUMENTS and FX and this for the vst2, the vst3 they install by default in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3.
From the DAW you assign it the finished VST folder, the tree in the DAW will be INSTRUMENTS and FX.
For my organization it is the simplest and easiest to manage, if you want to make folders in INSTRUMENTS and FX for each plugin you can also, the tree structure in the DAW will be even better...
    Have a nice day

@ArticStorm, the reason why I ask this here is reducing the amount of work of testing the DAWS. Knowing your experience can help me a lot. And if you guys can not share your experience without starting a war, what the heck is this forum about??

    Anyway, thanks for your comments

Yes, this was my first idea, but I see 2 disadvantages to this approach: you can not have one vst in 2 or more different folders and you cannot rename the vst as you wish, am I right?

What do you mean by "Browser"? do you mean the studio one vst browser or windows browser? I mean, you organized your vst inside studio one or in a windows shortcuts folder as I mentioned?

Same question for you @def12, you organize the vst's inside the FL studio or outside in a windows shortcuts folder?

The bigger question is how much experience do you have?

Because they will reduce the DAWs you have to try by a lot.

Also there are always work arounds if DAW A has not what you are looking for. For example Ableton Lives VST3 sorting in the browser sucks. work around is to create racks and put them into a folder in the User Library, then you can select this folder as a favourite. Voila achieved what you were looking for. But this doesnt tell you if you like the DAW already. (This solved an issue for me, i had with VST3 plugin in Live.)

I still suggest you download 5-6 DAWs, which you like from a short look at the GUI and workflow.
I wouldnt rely on people writing here about why DAW A is good for them, because its personal preference.

    Big missings are:
    - Digital Performer
    - Waveform
    - Samplitude

    Other missings:
    - Mixbus 32C
    - Mixcraft Pro Studio
    - n-Track Studio

p.s. Nuendo and Cubase are the same product for different purposes

Ok guys, I think we're missing the point here. Actually, I'm not so interested in your personal preferences, the question I posted is about DAWs functionality, so please, let's concrete if there's some basic operation DAWs can not do. That's the info I'm looking for.

I'm trying to choose a DAW that adapts more to my brain (if there's one, I'm not sure, my brain can be a little crazy) so I look for something easy to configure to my workflow/brain structure.

So for me it's important (if the DAW has the main features covered) to order my vst's acordding to my workflow and brains, a DAW that allows me to rename the plugins and store 1 plugin in different "folders" of the vst's tree.

About my experience, I worked during some time 15 years ago with protools, and I remember searching in a huge and disordered vst tree. It was discomfortable and a waste of time, so this time I want to plan it better.

Fukkin hell :'D It's insane, that this is your priority for choosin a DAW haha :'D rename Plugins and puttin a plugin in a different folder is a Part of your workflow? This makes absolutely no sense to me mate x)

Like they said before - everybody will pushin the DAW, they are confortable enough with. I would guess there is nobody, who works that intense with every single DAW, that it's possible to give you the right advice, you wanna hear :'D

And if you not interested in personal preferences, then try the DAW's by yourself and find the right one, which fits for you :)

Relax my friend, laughing to other people's questions is not the right way to start.

    - First, I know I'm crazy, I have no trouble with that
    - Second, I don't know what's funnier, my question or you not reading the thread, can you read more than 200 characters? because... as I said previously..
    - I'm asking for answers in 2 fields: CRITICAL DIFFERENCES IN DAWS FUNCTIONALITY and VST ORDERING POSSIBILITIES of the different DAWS
    - And yes, ordering the vst's is critical for me. If you search the internet you'll find people that has the same issue, so if that's not your problem it's ok, but it's a problem for other people.

PD: just a suggestion: if you have nothing useful to offer here, may be you could you to another thread
