Hi,

I happened to listen to this song earlier today after a really long time and I found it very interesting how the live drums are mixed (or recorded), just want to share with you, and maybe somebody have an idea of how it is done because I can tell it is not just stereo widening and maybe some old mic' technique recording like Glyyn Johns 3 mic setup or something. I'm not sure what it is called or what technique used. Maybe someone can shed some light on it. Please listen to the song till end because it is a good song, atleast I think so.

Please listen on proper stereo configuration, I don't think headphone will do justice. Pay attention to the drum's image.

Perhaps drum replacement so no need to use the original recording, placing drums where the engineer wished to as well as manipulating, cutting and pasting parts.

 

Sounds like a combination of haas and really particular panning automation happening.

 

to me, it sounds a little more 'choppy" than you might normally think of with automation/curves. More like they took takes from different mics, chopped and used sections of each? Some of the width sounds like they pushed the overheads wider out l/r than the rest of the kit. pretty creative work either way

 

Couldn't it be as simple as some non-traditional panning + carefully expanded/gated/edited individual tracks to achieve that contour and separation?

Although I think I feel what @juggz143 is referring to, I'm not even sure I hear automation, either... I'm thinking it might be an effect of the confusion due to the general lopsided-ness. Does anyone else hear panning automation? ... Oh, shit. Just heard the passage at 3:14 while typing this and there definitely seems to be something different with the snare... That makes me understand the theories of double-tracking/automation. Huh... 0:47 also makes double-tracking come to mind. Veeery heavily and tightly edited, if double-tracked all the way through. Really interesting, indeed. Cool discussion.

 

It reminds me a lot of IL Stereo Enhancer. By the way of panning. Listen to this example. 1 regular battery 2 with IL Stereo Enhancer Although many other plugins do this. Also clone the tracks and move a few milliseconds left or right

 

An easier way to do that effect is just to insert a Sample Delay of 1 sample with r/l unlinked. Duplicating the channel isn't often practical because it's a stem by that point.

The tom fill has some kind of auto panning, or it's chopped/edited. like a stereo sync sweep almost.

Doubletracked and counterpanned drums. Record twice and counterpan the two takes.

There are no fancy "spatial" plugins or "effects" here.
