This is not the first time I notice that the st**** iLok protection of Slate plugins crash immediately as soon as I lose my Internet connection (I often use my iPhone tethering at home or on the go).

Macbook M1 / Monterey 12.4 / Ableton Live 11.1.5 / Latest iLok update / Latest Slate update

But for the first time it happens that on top of that, I couldn't open my project anymore! After wasting a couple of hours of my time trying to figure this out, Metatune seems to be the culprit (.VST3 but I don't want to bother checking, I have too many instances opened in my project to replace them one by one).

Force re-scanning VST + VST3 didn't help of course. Perhaps I should stick to using only .AUs but anyway I think it doesn't matter, if you offer us VST/VST3 just get them to work!

Luckily, Ableton as st**** as it can be too saves the 10 last versions in Archives and I was able to NOT LOSE OF MY PROJECT I spent hours on.

Luckily too, I always save an empty version of the project as empty project + removing all the main channels but keeping the return channels + master only, in order to AVOID LOSING THEM TOO if you can't open precisely in this kind of situation because it's been corrupted. So luckily I could start over and quickly import my last project's .ALS into the saved return channels project, but that's very lucky, I think the average person will just lose his entire project in a case like this.

I find it a bit weird in all those years this Slate company has done nothing to fix their iLok protection which still sucks big time by the way (it's slowing down and still unstable at times, despite having a fast computer and internet connection).

Shall I stop paying for this Slate subscription? But I really need these plugins, why can't you do your job? I'm really not a fan of cracking products but as soon as they're cracked for Mac I'll be out of it, if you don't fix your sh*t very soon.

How is iLok, and more specifically "Slate ilok"; slowing down your machine? How do you even know this?

 

I feel you and sorry this happened to you, but iLok cloud is simply trash, I highly recommend you to get a dongle so you won’t have to deal with it once and for all, and also report this to their support (that’s also why we’re paying them, to provide fixes and support)
Also, always try to check if running Ableton via Rosetta or native helps

If this happens again, even with another plugin you can try to just delete the .VST3 file in the plugins folder that way it won’t even be able to try and opening it up, and you could recover your session or files at least

Don’t wait for it to get cracked on Mac because it won’t lol, nothing iLok has been cracked for Mac in years, there’s no group to do it

 

the last time I opened the iLok app was April. I have mostly UVI stuff that uses ilok, and I have never had any issue with it.

 

not every iLok implementation is the same, and there are various methods and wrappers to PACE, so comparing companies using iLok isnt really an indicator for anything

 

Thanks, that could be useful information and it's what I wanted to know. You shouldn't have the ilok app really affect anything because you do not have it open often, if ever. (izotope synth does this with their software manager for some reason, too).

 

I would make a list of the ones which I felt like I was paying them to keep using. I would then find either better, equivalent, or suitable comparable plugins that I didn't need to pay for. Usually you only need to replace a few key processor types anyway because these things are often bloated with junk/useless content to bulk up the hdd space requirement.
