The price is not bad considering what else is available in that price range. The closest Lenovo equivalent is hitting the $2000 (U.S.) mark.

Is this the beginning of Linux parity?

No one cares about Linux (and i'm a computer tech for 20 years+ )

Here is the "home users" share about Linux :
    Linux 2,4 %
    MacOS 16,15 %
    Windows 76, 13 %

Everything else than REALITY is pure ideology
This computer is going to be a GEEK computer ... with no market share of course
Because most users are NOT going to install Windows back on it

There's a reason why "Year of Linux on Desktop" has been a running joke for decades. I don't see why that would change.

But having been a "Linux guy" (workwise) for 25-odd years I can tell that non-home users care about Linux a lot. If you work with networks/servers/services then you know this. Devs care a lot, there's a reason why Docker was pushed to Windows, and there's a reason why WSL(2) is a thing. Developer laptops are a thing, whether they run Linux or not.

If at some point Windows totally monitors all of us or Windows becomes buggy and insecure, people will look for another operating system, probably it will be ChromeOS or Linux, of course only for their online business - reading e-mail and Google and so on.
For making music you will continue to use Windows 7,8,9,10,11,12,13..... or MacOs..... !

prefer my computer/notebook without any OS preinstalled. not paying money for any OS, since i can install alone. This cuts off like 30-40€ for OEM license.

for devs anything linux should be alright preinstalled.

it is quite reasonable/possible that Linux could reach wider share of OS used on a daily basis. We now have very solid distros using a very mature kernel.

We now also have Pipewire (stable) to get around the chunkiness of Linux audio routing & streaming with more improvement to come.
We have four very solid DAW choices with support for LV2, VST(3) and, as of today, officially CLAP (Bitwig/U-He).
Ardour, Bitwig Studio, Reaper, Tracktion Waveform

Of course this is not the first Linux based laptop, it is however the first one developed around a Linux OS by one of the big companies.

The layout of the DEV One is not only good for developers but, also for music production in a portable system.

Will HP keep development going in this direction?
Will we see comparable or, better offering from other system makers?

I say,,,Hopefully and, most likely. Microsoft is not just farting under the covers. They are shitting the bed & expecting you to be happy with it.
    imho....

My Zoom UAC-2 will supposedly run on it.
    From Reddit:
    dncrash
    ·4 yr. ago

I have a Zoom UAC-2 and it works with Linux (i used it for midi and guitar). I think I have the class compliant mode set to on but I can't really remember and I'm not at home to check. When 'they'(manufacturers, companies, etc.) talk about iPad/Computer they mean non-Windows/Windows because that's what most people are used to (just like in gaming when they say it works on PS4 and PC for example, they don't mean PC, they mean Windows).

Any class compliant device should work with Linux. Especially now with Pipewire. One of many articles that may help clarify.

Choosing an audio interface for Linux
If you’re using Linux as your OS of choice, what audio interface should you be using with it?

That's how I started using Linux - for daily browsing and stuff... But now, after 10-ish years of using it I realised I could make music with it, too, so my Windows partition doesn't get used as much as before. Still, I couldn't get everything done just with Linux [yet?] and I really miss some plugins since I don't want to use WINE to run those, but I've considered it since plugins I use work so well and stable. Not saying they are unstable in W7.

It's just that I get diarrhoea every time I see W8 or W10... it's such an ugly mess. Even W7 is a bit messy for me in comparison to Debian Linux with MATE desktop.

You need a reality-check: more than 2 out of 100 persons care about Linux on the desktop. That is not "nobody".

I don't believe you're a professional computer tech for 20+ years (ever worked in any large enterprise environments?). Your avatar pic suggests you are around 14-19 years old btw... so if you want to be taken seriously you should maybe change it.

Today I helped 3 people with configuring personal certificates on Linux installations. Two Ubuntu's and one Arch Linux. It's not my usual job to do help end-users but I was interested in what distributions they run and why. We have about 4-5% Linux Desktop users in about 20000 people. You do the math.

On the server side, the majority is running Linux in our datacenters. Then Windows Server. Then BSD. There is not a single MacOS available on the server side, because Apple sucks in large enterprise environments and it isn't legal (ie no support from Apple) to run virtualized MacOS on real datacenter hardware. Apple doesn't sell servers at all.

Chromebook is really, really uninteresting for anything except surfing the web and doing some basic office type work. But it is still getting more common among people who do just that.

No one cares about Chromebook in the audio world though. Bitwig runs under Linux, and a lot of Bitwig users actually runs it under Linux.

RME Audio USB interfaces runs on Linux.

Btw the main developer of Reaper, Justin Frankel, has is running Linux since several years back. And yes, Reaper runs in Linux as well.

too expensive to rival MacBook Air,
it's a neat developer laptop, but imo usable for Linux-oriented devs only,
performance-wise it shall be capable of Windows/MacOS virtualization though...
lack of 1Gbe (or 10Gbe) is pitiful, why is every laptop manufacturer avoiding it nowadays?

    TotalMix doesn't, and never will....
Reaper runs well on Linux, but most plugins not,
using Linux for audio is flexing on least suitable system for such task....

When you spec out the MacBook Air M2 to 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD & 67W charger. You are in the $1800 U.S. range for pricing.
No multi-monitor out, no NIC & not known if it will run Linux and, how well at this point.

The DEV One is a solid & well designed notebook/laptop at a reasonable price. Especially given the current market.
