hello, there !

i`m having a problem on my lenovo notebook win 10 every few months.
seems like they happen after some win updates.
anyway, i can`t open some things like outlook or a jpeg. no windows popping up. sometimes i can only see a little of the window (minimize, close).
there are icons in the taskbar, but clicking them results in nothing. choosing to close doesn`t work either.
i just stays. in task manager i can kill the process.
also, avira free in the file context menu disappeared a few weeks ago. so unistalled and installed avg free.
is there any good reliable antivirus that can proof my system on its heart and kidneys ?
or any removal kit ?

btw: i`ve noticed that my usb hdd for transfering my downloaded files to my desktop pc is dropping the speed periodicly when connected to my desktop pc.

If a virus is as deep into a system to knock out A/V the only reliable way is reinstalling Windows.

 

I had a system back in Windows XP days that behaved similar to yours. A few basic functions failed. For example, I could no longer install patch packages (.msp) and many little quirks added up. But it wasn't a virus, Windows disassembled itself over time. At some point it was easier to rebuild Windows than to constantly work around bugs.
I got used to make a backup of a stable system with mail, browser, etc. I can always fall back quickly. This saves a lot of work.

It can be related to Lenovo third party softwares too.
A fresh "NON Lenovo" Win 10 install can save you (like Windows 10 Entreprise LTSC)

But you need to backup everything AND install again ...

 

What people commonly refer to as a "Virus", is almost entirely a dead thing in 2022. Malware, ransomware, and other nasty threats are all out there in numbers which more than make up for them. But they do not spread via vectors which classify them as a true "virus". Which is why you see so many users not even using Virus Scanner software anymore; instead focusing on better (by being more current) solutions like anti-malware and firewall products.

 

Probably forgetting the general bugs in both the OS and MS products like outlook that you have to end up search for answers for and downloading a stupid little bloody kb file to sort. Classic is adding a file from a recent files list in Outlook and it doesn’t send the attachment! Gobshites the lot of them.

 

Is this limited to UWP apps? If yes, upgrade your OS to the latest version. Maybe its an HDD problem as well. Software gets really wacky when hardware doesn't work properly.

As someone said, viruses are really uncommon, nobody is really interested in making those since Windows Defender does one hell of a good job these days. Antiviruses themselves have gotten useless for users like us. Only enterprises need to worry.

It maybe some driver issue as well. Hard to tell anything really on Windows because all you ever get is super generic error messages. Windows 10 2004 and onwards has gotten pretty stable, its not the same crap 15XX, 16XX or 17XX versions were.

Check your disk health with CrystalDiskInfo, if it shows a yellow then your disk is failing. Update your drivers from Windows Update and then Driver Booster. Although I am most certainly sure that its an old version of Windows that has these bugs or your hard drive.

 

I would format and reinstall my operating system using Dban https://dban.org.
Dban really deletes all files by overwriting several times.

Then update all drivers and set up Windows to be user friendly.

An external HDD is always slower than an internal, if you need something faster buy an external SSD if money is available.

All the above, but a severely virus damaged PC is rarely recovered at its best capabilities, even with the best antivirus.
However, to check it better, it would be best to reboot via live Kaspersky recovery disc (or USB key), or Dr Web or things like that.
Boot, connect to internet, download updates and scan.
At least you should get more infos on infecting threats and maybe get some healing.

After that, if FUBAR, you probably have to wipe, reformat, reinstall all.

 

If you need it, I can create a GData boot image which you can burn on CD or put on a USB drive and boot from it.
It'll scan your whole machine for malware, viruses etc. without running your actual OS.
GData is one of the best Antivirus developers in the business, if there really is an infection, it'll find it.

Just use Rufus or Ventoy to create a bootable USB drive and then boot from it.

You could also use Tronscript which can help with automated windows cleaning tasks and antivirus scanning. Tronscript is designed to be used in your "live" Windows environment and not on an external USB or disk.

Also, as the others mentionned, you could use a Windows PE on an external USB and boot from it.
There are many options: KRD, Sergei Strelec, Hiren's PE or Medicat USB come to mind.

 

How did you get the ISO with the latest virus database/definitions ? I thought G Data discontinued their BootCD utility since 2018 if I remember correctly. Thank you for the link, had to add it on my Ventoy recovery USB.

did a run and it found the eicar test file and the mirc rar with a malware like avg did.
i think i started the mirc keygen used with a sandbox months ago (avira alerted back then). could be the culprit. but don`t know why it should take months to react to my system so late.

yeah, i had a similar prob with xp, too. took several years to take place. but now on the win 10 19044.1766 it is happening in short time.
