That is technically correct, but the DisplayPort also offers a lot of advantages.

HDMI vs. Displayport - What are the differences?

Even though the two standards are similar in their basic function, there are still a few striking differences. For the widespread HDMI connection, there are only cables up to a length of ten meters, after which transmission difficulties can occur. The cable for DisplayPort (DP for short), on the other hand, can be up to five meters longer. In terms of transmission speed, the latest version of the DisplayPort is clearly ahead with around 77 gigabits per second compared to HDMI with just under 43 gigabits per second.

In terms of maximum quality or resolution, the two come to a common denominator with 8K. However, note the different versions. For HDMI cables, version 2.1 achieves these values. For DisplayPorts, 2.0 is the latest version. There are also different types of HDMI cables, such as "High Speed" (particularly fast data transfer rate) or "Ethernet" (an Internet connection can be established via HDMI), so you should think about what you need before buying.

A DisplayPort on the other hand is especially interesting for gamers because it supports G-Sync from NVIDIA. The technologies perfectly matches the performance of the graphics card and the monitor to avoid judder and the like. On the other hand, AMD's counterpart called Freesync also works via HDMI. Also practical: You can connect several monitors in series via DisplayPort. So if you want to connect more than one monitor and they have two DPs, you only have to connect one to your output device and simply connect the monitors together.

Another plus is that DisplayPort is compatible with other connection types like VGA and USB-C. This means, for example, that external graphics cards with DisplayPort can also be connected to monitors with VGA or USB-C interfaces via a corresponding adapter.

I looked at Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, AOC, Samsung etc.. all with less specs and higher pricing, some astronomically higher. SO I am going to order the LG 32GN650-B. Its really the only namebrand model that I can find for a decent price with 32" flat 2k 1440p 165hz DP 1.4 it has freesync which wont work with my UHD770 card (at least I dont think it will?), but apparently it will work with GTX/RTX G-Sync cards via DP 1.4, confirmed on a couple of gaming sites... anyway, anything last minute to reconsider about this one?

@BEAT16 you were a big help man!

i've got dual 32 inch monitors (hell yeah), a cheap viewsonic 4k "HDR" that upon closer inspection, much like Bain discovering he had loafers on, actually clocks in at below what HDR is really considered. So slightly disappointing. I also have a LG 1440p 144hz monitor that i love for gaming. it's my main monitor, so that's what ableton is on most of the time- but it really shouldn't be.

I AM like LITERALLY insane so take it with a grain of salt but I SWEAR there are sometimes issues with my Nvidia Graphics card, the g-sync/freesync and plugin GUI's. i honestly would stay away from a hi refresh rate monitor (at least with nvidia drivers- i've seen other complaints online about it) if i was only using my computer for audio. an oscilliscope WOULD look cool at 144hz or 240hz but i mostly seem to just run into issues. I've got it set now so able is forced to go to a fixed 60 hz but i'm still like paranoid about it.

maybe that's just me- well i KNOW it isn't with select plugin issues with high refresh rates, cause i found people bitching about it too.

if i had to do it again... i'd probably get a 28 inch 1440p 144hz. sometimes the 32 inch is slightly too big for where i sit, and i'm too zoned into the middle and missing the edges. thats how you get taken out sometimes! then i'd get an ACTUAL HDR (i think mine is like 300 luminosity or whatever they measure it in and actual HDR is 400. maybe i looked a long time ago.) big ass 60 hz 4k for movies and shit that doesn't need quick reflexes.

oh- and ps i didn't read the entire thread so sorry if i'm repeating anything or saying shit that's counter to someone else's opinion who knows more about it. BEAT16 seems like an expert so i'd just do what he says lol... i still need to go through the links he gave me for optimizing all the stupid windows shit, although i got a lot of it. i've been distracted messing with acustica's nebula3, it sounds awesome and even if that's a placebo it doesn't mean i'm not enjoying it.

but the common theme seems to be you can optimize your computer for games... or for audio. not really both simultaneously. which is fine for me, i suck at both, but if i had $$$ i would make to separate battle stations.

I yesterday bought a one-year-old used RTX 3070 for my Pc and didn't recognize that I have only a DVI cable for my old monitor. So I look up on the internet and found a 1-year-old used Xiaomi Curved Gaming Monitor 34". And I am mostly a gamer. It is way better than my QNIX 27" Korean Monitor. from 2015. I always fear getting an LCD monitor. Compared to my beloved CRT monitors with almost no input lag, no dead pixel problems, clouding effects, backlight bleeding, visibility angle, color, or timing problems. I had CRT monitors with 100Hz back then. Still miss them somehow.
But so far this Xiaomi monitor looks very good without any issues. The list price is around 369,-€ in Germania, but I got one for 200,-€ ( ebay-kleinanzeigen.de )
The guy who sold it to me had also used also a mac book on this monitor. Ok, it could have a little bit more brightness and a bit more contrast but. No clouding or backlight bleeding at all. No dead pixel. And a very good design.

that is a pretty monitor! stoner lol! i see that lighter- it DOESN'T take one to know one with stoners but in this case I sure am too hahaha. Or you like incense or chain smoking cigs inside. Are you playing competitive fps games? I should have mentioned it was really only FPS games where i was like a 28 inch monitor might be just a tad bit easier to get everything in frame.

how is the input lag for you compared to the old screen, and the size? i really only get OCD about that stuff when it comes to online shooters, i want every advantage i can get, graphics all set for max fps etc.

if i ever have money and make a legit cave for music it'd be sweet to get a bunch of crt's as hipster/cyberpunk wall art.

@macros With my old Qnix 27" I had about 30ms. I've seen a test where they measured up the timings and input lags and they could really confirm what I had for a feeling concerning the latency. Ok this monitor is for the price very good, 200,-€ is nothing. But I have never tested other monitors as well. My QNIX was an IPS monitor; even with that 30ms input lag, I could bash many good people. But u got these ghosting effects and can't see very clearly the AWP's crosshair. U had to feel it. With this monitor, it is definitely better. 4ms pixel response time is ok. My older had 8ms :D

I would just go and read some Monitor Charts and tests on PRAD.de to get useful info. They have special tests for allround, graphic or gaming monitors and they were separated into these groups. So it's very clearly organised what makes me find the info I need and can compare between different monitors. The site is not perfect. But believe me better than the paid CHIP, Computer Bild & Co.
Only one thing. The site is a german site but hey Google has a page translator. ;)
