Lol. I've had a similar experience when I worked with a young director on a 30 minutes short. He had a script and actors and everything.
I was sound engineer on the set. Then I composed some music and even did some foley and fx stuff.
But when he was done editing he was so disappointed that he never showed the finished result to anybody, not even the actors or the crew.
Art can be a harsh mistress sometimes.

Dunno if this is of any interest to anyone but, when i compose unless its for a night club scene etc i never use a DAW's metronome i just hit record play into the DAW my guide track which 90% of the time is something straight off my head mistakes and all i just send it straight down to the DAW, if i hear mistakes i just dub the fixes in exactly the same way later, meaning i don't go into the edit menus with pencils etc.

A few reasons why i work this way.

    1: Its less rigid.

2: Its because i come from a working period that was tape based only.

3: It's quicker believe me or not.

4: I never bother with quantization unless it's a strict dance beat which i rarely do now a days.

5: And i feel this is it's strongest point - my time signatures and tempo can vary at free will without any clock restrictions in real time.

6: Learn whatever DAW etc you use backwards don't do the thing a lot of people do is jump ship every new release that will confuse the issue even more same rules applies to plugins - Less Equals More and remember it's meant to be enjoyable if it's not then take a break and re-think and then return refreshed.

I grant you it's not everyones way of doing things but if you're going to or hoping to go down the professional road into film music then this is one way to approach it there are other ways but i tend to stay with what i found works best for me.

Not sure if this information is of any help or not but if you have any questions about what i have said then i will try and do my best to reply, bare in mind i'm not on here alot.

    Cheers

It 's fine to see that I'm not alone working that way. Even if, not always, and not all the way.

I tend to combine this with edits and so.

But it is true that when having an idea it's really a good thing to record it in your daw as if it was a tape machine, no matter tempo and errors, and keep that track as a guide and as a mark about what you truly want to express in this piece of music.

As I've just registered on this forum, thought I'd drop in and say hello to any other film/game composers. Put me in the film composing category - although I do this just for fun.

whitePhazer Thank you for the links

I knew Hugo Tromp already. He is a young genius, impressive. And we are lucky enough that he shares is knowledge and compositional views with us (this is not common)

Thanks to you I discovered Daniel James, I didn't knew him, it very interesting channel he's got there.

I knew Alex Pfeffer But through Soundcloud I think.

Hey guys I know I haven't been on in a while my life has been a hurricane. I'm currently residing on a friend's couch but plan on having my own place around March. And hopefully us composers can get some good threads started and some networks for projects. :)

Those emotional hurricanes are tough, but good to see that you're working to get through it

Hi everyone… My first post with you guys. As I'm sure is the case with everyone else, I'm trying to land myself opportunities in the film and video game industry… especially the video games. My sister is a film maker so I've had the chance to score several of her films and I love that work!

I just think it would behoove me to enter the video game world since it's such a hot field…

Anyway… glad to be here. Cheers!!

Hi everyone! First real post. Came to audiosex crying for help, staying for the great community

I'm an aspiring composer of music for media, preferably for video games. I'm a student with Full Sail University's online bachelor's program for music production, which has been great for making me stick with the program and forcing me to compose.

Here's a composition I completed for an assignment last week, actually. Any and all criticism is appreciated.

    Code:
    <iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/151788359&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_artwork=true"></iframe>
More details from the SoundCloud page:

Music for a video game demo. A 32-bar loop with varying arrangements depending on what part of a medieval castle town the player is currently in (a la Warcraft or Skyrim).

Each layer plays through before moving on to the next, however in a game, these layers would crossfade in and out of each other, reacting to how the player moves. Layers in this bounce are as follows:

    1) Ambient (a sound bed establishing the sound and progression, this stem is present in all proceeding layers)
    2) Street music (adds a medieval folk feel as though walking through the city streets)
    3) Church music
    4) Courtyard music (becomes more regal and militaristic as the player enters the proper castle grounds)
    5) Outside music (a more sweeping, epic theme when the player is outside or approaching the castle town, taking in its expanse)

I look forward to hearing everyone's work, and learning as I go. *yes*

    Hey guys.

Though I'd give my 2cents as well.

We're composing music/SFX for games, short movies, animations like logo reveals, trailer, audio books, jingles for radio and TV and commercials.

It's been running very well lately.

We're mostly using Cubase 7.5, as the whole team is most comfortable in Cubase. We also produce custom music for other things, like ghost producing etc, but for me, giving a picture/video/animation life by scoring music for it is just the most fun of all the jobs. It's always a nice journey :)

    Have a great weekend everyone!
