Baranowski's Musica Universalis reminds me of my first 'classical' album that I actually purchased *yes*

 

Now this is my kinda thread!

My love of classical started where most Western kids get it from: Cartoons! Warner Bros particularly used alot of great classical pieces as background music for the animations... to this day any time i hear the William Tell overature or Ride of the Valkeries i think of Looney Tunes!!!!

its romantic, nostalgic and morbidly beautiful. Its everything i try to create with my synthetic doom jazz. Its essence has stayed with me since i first heard in in college. When cresendo is peaked, and the swell is at its peak, (jump to 6:30 in the vid) i visualize the ghosts of ancient russian monarchs all walking through a snowy forest scene, rising from the grave to march back to St.Petersberg to reclaim their lost thrones.

My all time favorite classical piece is Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana............part of it here used to such a powerful emotional effect in the final scene of The Godfather Pt III...........pass me the tissues please

This is a great subject!
For those of you who are interested in minimalism, there is Polish composer Wojciech Kilar, known for doing the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 ''Dracula'' movie, but he did other stuff, and I highly recommend the CD ''Requiem father Kolbe'':

On the same CD, there's this piece also ''Choralvorspiel'':

He has many other interesting compositions.

Another minmalistic Polish composer I highly recommend is Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, especially this CD:

His symphony no.3:

There is also Giya Kancheli from Georgia, who also has many other works worth checking out! Here is ''Morning prayers'', an excellent recording:

Finally, if you never heard of him, consider American composer Morton Feldman and his ''indeterminate'' music.

His string quartet no.2 is 5 hours long:
