It's a shame Dave Smith didn't live to see it.

Hopefully now, MIDI done in various DAWs will seemlessly. More like raw audio tracks do. For me, this also apply to hardware protocols as well.

I would say, it was time at last. On the other hand...
I fear we'll have to wait quite long to see widely implemented MIDI 2 in HW.
You know, like IP6. Everyone knows what it is and have it, but few use it.
    Cross fingers.

  11. I'm wondering if 2.0 can be had through a firmware update or if it will require some element of new hardware? If it requires something like a new chip in your music hardware it will mean a lot of new stuff, like keyboard controllers, will be on the market over the next year, right? Could become interesting, current and older equipment will go on sale to move it out, or lots of new models advertising midi 2.0 that we'll need to start saving for if we want to use this. Will have to do some research to understand where this is going, didn't even know there was a 2.0 in the works till I saw this thread.

I know they have been working on this for years...but oh, the shitty timing.
Edit: Oh shit. It's a two year old video. Maybe they are stuck?

He did. MIDI 2.0 was officially released in 2020. Even the linked YouTube video is almost two years old. :dunno:

    Midi 1.0 Resolution = 127 steps
Midi 2.0 Resolution = 4,294,967,296 steps i.e. each step of Midi 1.0 now has a resolution of 3,381,864 steps.

The most important facts about MIDI 2.0 at a glance:

What are the most important new features for MIDI 2.0? What changes with MIDI 2.0?

    - The resolution of playing aids like controllers is increased to mostly 32 bits with MIDI 2.0.
    - There are note-specific articulations in high resolution.
    - Number of channels increased: MIDI 2.0 offers 256 MIDI channels.
    - MIDI 2.0 is bidirectional.
    - Devices can exchange profiles, properties and the like automatically.

Is MIDI 2.0 backward compatible? What do I have to pay attention to if I have "old" MIDI 1.0 devices?

    - Yes, MIDI 2.0 should be fully compatible to the old standard MIDI 1.0.
    - Old equipment can still be used and integrated as before.

The implementation of MIDI 2.0 is way more complicated than for 1.0. I guess a lot of vendors wont implement it even for new hardware or they just use a subset (e.g. 1.0 to remain on the safe side of the street).
    Endless possibilities. :)
Also the possibility for errors is much greater so we'll see more controllers having problems to keep up with Midi Data due to poor implementation on hardware or software side of the story.
    2^20 error numbers

May get interesting for a while.

1.0 was such a success because it was so simple that even mediocre programmers could use it pretty much bug-free. Let's see...

It will work. The automatic backwards compatibility ensures that. However, it will be a long time before every DAW, every plugin and sound library has adapted the full power of MIDI v2.
