Mel-Lofi is a free virtual instrument plugin (ROMpler) for digital audio workstations on Windows and macOS.

This virtual instrument is based on the Mellotron samples recorded by KVR member Taijiguy and brings a total of 23 presets distributed across 5 main instrument categories.

All the samples were slightly edited and looped for best playability. Still, the sound is rough and unpolished to keep the original character.

For more versatility, 4 effect layers were added: vinyl, radio noise, mechanical belt noise, and rain. They each have an on/off button and volume sliders, also they're labeled with their corresponding note on the keyboard.

The interface is simple to use with controls such as volume, pan, preset attack/release, also reverb, tune with 3 octaves, LFO modulation, and lowpass/highpass filter cutoff.

Mel-Lofi can be used in Lo-Fi Hip Hop, Ambient, Chillout, Pop, EDM, and other similar styles. It is available in VST/VST3 Windows and VST/VST3/AU macOS – compatible with the latest versions, also natively compatible with M1 chips.

    Features:
    • 690 MB extracted size / 590 MB download size.
    • 23 instrument presets.
    • 4 additional fx layers.
    • attack/release envelope.
    • cutoff for lowpass/highpass filters.
    • global tune.
    • tremolo section.
    • room reverb.
    • global gain and pan.

The only thing I like about it was the flute sound in the demo. It reminds me of a few television and film scores that I remember from the early 60's.

2Rule - TugMidiSeq (MIDI Chords effect Plugin) Windows / MacOS

2RuleMidiSeq is a polyphonic arp and seq creator. The notes of the pressed chords are automatically
lined up from the lowest pitch to the highest pitch, creating musical polyphonic pattens
according to the beat moments in the seq window. A circular note flow display for fun.

    Parameters:
    • Variable speeds for each chord note.
    • Variable beats for each chord note.
    • Variable velocity for each chord note.
    • Variable duration of note.
    • Octaves for each chord notes.
    • Midiin for chords (your own fingers) :).
    • ReSync.
    • Seq Matrix.
    • Randomization.
    • Presets.
    • InBuilt SineWave synth for check pattern.

    Extra Features:

-In addition to the already existing adjustable velocity knobs, the option of using the velocity of the midi-in "FixVel./InVel." button has been added.
-In addition to the automatic ordering of the notes according to the "from low to high pitch", the option of "setting automatically incoming MIDI note to the lowest empty line" is added (NoteOrdered/NoteFirstIn button). In this case, when pressed up a note, the corresponding line becomes empty (the sorting algorithm is not called).

If you are a Sforzando Player user there is also Sforzatron based on the same samples.

    Stylo Synthesis
is a virtual recreation of the famous portable organ from the 60s. Most stylophone plugins and libraries use very short samples that don't reflect the unstable nature of this instrument. For Stylo Synthesis, each note has been sampled for 5 seconds to capture these magic imperfections. The result is the most accurate stylophone emulation, preserving the attack and sustain of the original instrument.

    Features of the plugin version:
    • 1 multi-sampled instrument.
    • 1 sample per note.
    • Multi-LFO.
    • Room reverb.
    • Lowpass/highpass filter.
    • Low-CPU usage.
    • Amplitude range controls.
    • 3 voice modes: polyphonic, monophonic, and legato.
Available as a VST/VST3/AU plugin instrument for Windows and macOS.

Also available as Kontakt and Decent Sampler libraries.

These days not much is free. If it has not already been said, the best free software for making music is one that works as promised that does not have advertisements pop up, or requests perpetually to register it to get a "Pro" version. It simply works as intended.
Any free software that delivers on its promises with the above criteria belongs in the group of "Best free music making software".
    ....As you all were... :)

    Dafuq you on about?

There's plenty of free stuff that's useful, not a bait and switch or nagware. And even then, not everything has to be the latest shiniest pro things.

I've been a patron of Chris's for years and I can attest that he has I believe 504 cpu efficiency Windows plugins that one can freely download.

    Oh I know this.
As for what am I on about?... The title "best free software for making music".
best for him? her? a group? a country? everyone?
No such thing as the best / a single best, as there will always be something better eventually. So if it has no shit in it that nags you and does what it says, it belongs in the group of the "best" 10, 10, 1,000 - whatever. what am I on about? common sense, comparing is a waste of time.
