An on-screen piano and synthesizer you can play with your computer keyboard or mouse. You can also use PC 73 as a virtual midi controller to control General Midi software or hardware devices.

Multiband Madness

The delay processing is split into three separate modules, which can all be adjusted independently. Drag the crossover points in the waveform display to quickly set up the frequency ranges of the three bands. Then choose a delay time (including dotted and triplet feel), feedback level, and gain adjustment for each. This means you can have a short delay for your low end and longer ones for mids and highs to send them bouncing around the room. On and off buttons for each band allow you to disable any unwanted processing, just in case you want to keep your bass line tight or mid-range clean.

Saturate, Crush & Detune

Standard delays for each of the three bands sound complex and expansive, but you can push the effect to the limit with three effects for each band. These run entirely independently and include saturation, bitcrushing, and detuning. Apply as much or as little of each process as you like to create different audio effects. Try introducing sparkling highs with saturated harmonics in the upper-frequency range. Detune the midrange delay for a wavering analog feel in the body of the sound. Make your bass line scream with crushed low end.

Looks are everything

The main window shows exactly what's happening to each of the three bands as the audio passes through the plugin, valuable visual feedback to keep tabs on your signal transformations. The three colored waveforms clearly display the effect of each module's processing allowing for accurate monitoring and surgical shaping at every stage of the chain.

Darvaza is a multichannel gate with a twist : whenever the gate closes on your input signal, you get a
perversion of your source spat back at you. It can however work as a time synchronized classic tremolo too.

Download Darvaza for free here. The zip file contains both VST2 and VST3 versions. There is no installer, nor
is one needed. Simply copy the DLL into your usual VST folder. Instructions are included in the readme.

 

The best free effects plug-ins
Now that we’ve reviewed utilities, let’s take a look at effects, starting with some bundles.


We’ll begin with something you can’t miss: prolific software maker Meldaproduction and its MFreeFXBundle, a free bundle with… 32 plug-ins! It includes tools and effects that ought to cover most of your needs, even if they have some limitations (no preset saving, for instance). All processors are excellent, but Melda’s philosophy might not be right for everybody: the software maker always goes for “geek” interfaces with controls everywhere, which might discourage beginners. Try it out, and if turns out it’s not your cup of tea, several software makers have other things to offer.

Positively less exhaustive but also more accessible is the Free87 bundle by EaReckon. If Melda leaves you cold, here you’ll find an EQ, a Noise Gate, a limiter, and a compressor, all very easy to learn to use and pretty satisfying in terms of sound.

Finally, we can’t go on without mentioning the excellent Blue Cat Freeware Plug-ins Pack II which comes with lots of modulation effects, as well as some control and visualization utilities.
