A Piano Roll for writing flexible rhythms, quintuplets and other tuplets

    Hello all,

I'm in a lookout for a good piano roll editor that can do, well, tuplets (on top of triplets which most do). So basically something like: I input 5 quarter notes, then select all to squeeze/stretch to 4 quarter notes. I might have a false memory that most DAWs can do this, but so far only FL Studio seems to do this. Reaper has a lot of settings for the MIDI editor but I've yet to find one that does this. Ableton has a triplet mode but that's as far as it goes.

And FL Studio I'm not too familiar with. It's great but I'm not too conversant with it.

I could do this in a score editor by writing in the ratio, but while I can read notation I'm not comfortable in writing notes this way really. I could script this out to write various tuplets to a midi clip, but this would be a hassle.

I can do it, but I'm lazy and looking for the easiest way to achieve this

So, ASers, what's your take? Am I missing out, or being an idiot, or attempting something reasonable people don't do?

As you said FL Studio is the go to for this. I think Studio One also has this function, but unsure as i'm only using FL and Reason as a Plugin in FL.

Thank you, can the FL plugin output MIDI? If so I could sequence my shit there and then record to MIDI in Ableton (my main axe) and edit to my liking there.

I think Blue Cat Audio - Blue Cats Connector can do this. Or just export it as midi in FL and import it in Ableton then.

That's really my plan if I don't come up with better solutions. Perhaps I'll create dummy clips in FL for various tuplets and save as MIDI and then just copy and paste in Ableton. A hassle but it's a workaround at least.

How about squeezing or stretching to any value you want? Piece of cake in REAPER.
Selet the notes, press and hold [alt] move the cursor to the end of any note so it turns into a hand and start moving. You can do this with or without Snap to grid.

I started with the five E3 and stretched/squeezed the others

Huh, I tried various things in Reaper but somehow this eluded me, thank you!

Again, huh, I never thought about using warping for this. Sure it's a workaround, but it's something that seems to work that I can work around.

    Thanks!

with Reaper the sky is the limit, as someone who started with FL Studio the only thing I miss in Reaper is being able to input notes with just one click (exactly like FL, not the "drawing mode").

You mean mouse click? Right, in Reaper you need to double click to create a note. But that's no biggie, is it?

In FL there is a mode called draw where you just press the mouse ones and than input multiple notes with the cursor so it's something diffrent.

    Info From FL Homepage:
Paint (B) - Paints multiple notes as you drag in lines. You can paint notes above or below existing notes to create chords. Left-click to add a single note. Click-and-drag to add multiple notes. Right-Click notes to delete them. Modifier keys: (Shift) - Monophonic paint allows vertical movement while painting AND replaces existing (or selected) notes to create a monophonic score. Use (Ctrl) to make a selection.

It's also available for the step sequencer.

I'm a Reaper user so no biggie, just a minor thing

As I said, no pencil tool or drawing mode, I'm aware of that workflow.

Never used it also maybe sometime for Hi-Hat Patterns. I think the best DAW is which fits you the best. For me this is FL (But Only in Combination with the Akai Fire). The Only Thing i miss is real MPE Support, on this Level that FL is you need to add support for experimental Stuff like that. By the Way my Roli Blocks went brock just waiting for the next Stock of Roli Lumi or can you recommend something that is similar?
