How about CPU usage when oversampling in comparison to just use a higher Sample frequency e.g.: 192kHz ?

Yes, this is a question I've asked myself as well.
You only use oversampling on plugins, where you need it, while a higher samplerate affects every plugin. So My guess would be oversampling is better. But I do not know if this calculation is valid. Maybe someone else knows better.

Btw. I've experienced that very often it is that you even need oversampling at 96kHz. Especially at compressors I experienced that sometimes one even needs x16 at 96kHz to completely get rid of aliasing.

Ha, very good question. Unambiguous answer, it depends. [IMG]

In my little example I used only one plugin which was either oversampled or not. In this case 4x OSing the FX (and VSTis) or using 4x the SR doesn't really matter (diff of ~ 0.x%). But when you use a bunch of plugins and use 4x FX OSing only for some, 4x the SR needs way more power which is logical because then every single plugin is oversampled. :guru:
Additionally, I wouldn't use bluntly 4x FX OS, rather specific values for the individual plugins.

    A is brighter than B
    B is brighter than C
I don't know which is oversampled but I prefer A

Yep, this is a good one. As a hopeless geek-techie perhaps I'll do some tests myself. Oversampling is easier on the CPU for sure, the question is if it's "proportional" to the normal use.

I did some intensive tests with various saturation plugins just a few weeks ago. I found that (assuming that your run your project at 44.1 kHz) 4x oversampling is in most cases enoughto push the aliasing below audible territory (usually way below -90 dbFS).

Might be a different story if you are a high gain or heavy distortion guy, but for typical saturation scenarios 4x OS is my go to.

Unfortunately I also found that Ableton Live doesn't apply offline oversampling, if you use a VST3 plugin with built in offline oversampling option. You have to set it manually,
