    yes, Keith Emerson was ahead of his time. The whole album is great....and pictures at an exhibition.

    I love them too. Theoretically even in a complex time signature you can still apply polyrhythms and many writers do, but yes, hearing 7 over 3 or a 3/16 played over a 5/8 and played well, is definitely different and more intricate than just a time signature pattern.

    That's why in a weird way Frank Zappa sort of doesn't qualify for this thread- a lot of his stuff is in pretty normal time sigs even though the polyrhythmic stuff happening is near unplayable by humans...

    Zappa had this weird dividing thing going on, using a lot of triplets and quintuplets and what else. He played his guitar in pretty elastic time against a steady pulse, and then made his band do the same.

    My favourite in this regard is the solo in Stink-foot:
