They are a bank that purchased an industry standard. They haven't been any sort of software developer for a long time. Third party offloading to sustain a monstrous subscription push.

I've been trying to switch over my folks from Pro tools for some time. So far, they've got PT, Ableton and StudioOne which are all far superior to me. This is just the nail in the coffin.

That's right, subscriptions can be fine as long as they're a way of getting a rental software when you can't afford the perpetual version. But when it becomes the only way to use a software, then it becomes totally unacceptable. A real legal scam.

These companies like Avid, McDSP and Sonnox are the only ones to adopt this ruthless policy, mainly going against legit users themselves. And it is no coincidence that all three companies are the only ones that have never had the pleasure of dealing with R2R. Only R2R can change the rules, and mainly help us legit users.

Yes, american imperialists are completely insolent, like an old fart Biden.
$1000 for 2-3 updates in year.
You owe us for the fact that we exist. :)

Tested for 5 minets on MacOS systems:
    El Capitan (HFS+)
    Hi Sierra (HFS+)
    Catalina (APFS)

2 new virtual instruments (separatedly) :
    Avid GrooveCell
    Avid SynthCell

But it's not even a question of imperialism. All the audio companies in the world are American now.
The problem is Avid. They are legal scammers. They used to scam people with the HDX joke for at least 15 years, now with the poison buns in the form of subscritions.

Well, 15 years back and later, computers weren't capable of doing the real hefty sessions with hundreds of tracks & dozens of plugins. You needed HDX. Go figure: today large post-audio sessions still use at least 2 PT systems on 2 computers, linked together.
Another advantage of HDX was zero latency on monitoring recordings, pretty essential for professional work.

These new plans: finally the 'affordable' version (Studio) has surround mixing, advanced automation, VCA & enough tracks and auxes.
Still not happy with the subscription model though, but devs need to eat as well.

that's quite obvious, when PT use own proprietary AAX plugin format, where plugin devs need to pay separately for access to AVID programming APIs,
more disturbing is no mention of native Apple Silicon support, means it's nowhere close...

I would say majority of (up-to-date) ProTools are just students,
I don't know of any Pro studios who would have latest Macs and latest ProTools, paying for Ultimate subscriptions,
literally all facilities have old 2010-2012 Mac Pros with PT 10 (sometimes even older, sometimes newer PT 12) and that's it....

Nothing has changed, only one license was added, instead of First now an Artist, but for money.

    Pro Tools Ultimate --> Flex
    Pro Tools --> Studio
Pro Tools First (Free) --> Artist ($100)

Maybe this is why Pro Tools users act like they've got a spiked club up their ass 24/7

They actually do have one! Avid sticks it there when you buy into their pricing fraud as an added bonus!

Well, you may be right about Pros using older versions, I never thought about that. The only pro I know that keeps fairly updated in both PT and Mac hardware is in major motion picture film scores.

The REAL question is : WHERE ALL THIS MONEY GO ?
Not in development for sure ...
They only speak about "industry standard" ... and sheep follow

Look at features push on Reaper, Cubase, Studio One ... and look at Protools.

Now look at stock figures on 5 years :
    https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=avid+company+stock

    2011-2021 : under 10 dollars
    2021-2022 : 30 bucks !

Guess from what pockets this money came ... proletarians

not advocating anyone, but let's assume creating multiple crippled flavours of ProTools and maintaining its licensing/protection schemes and databases for each of them, takes additional time and money,
on the other hand, Justin sold Winamp, Shoutcast and his company for total of $80 million, so he can do whatever he wants with Reaper, not following orders of any investors or shareholders I guess
