personally I would not recommend one of those cheap amazon things. I had something like that explode and catch fire/smoke. Some Startech convertor.

Funny you mention Startech.. I ordered an outrageously expensive USB 3.0 to expresscard adapter from them for my old thinkpad x230 and it refused to stay plugged in.. and the speeds were slower than 2.0

getting a refund from them took ages. never again.

The Focusrite 6i6, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20 all have S/PDIF connections that allow you to increase your channel count by connecting another digital device.

I appreciate people trying to help. I'd appreciate it even more if people were to actually read the first post or any post for that matter.

Latency isn't important in my use case.

Those little ESI interfacea have both as I remember.
I hate their driver for lying about the latency though.
Saying 2ms when it is 6-7 is a dickmove.

    From the description:
    • In digital recording mode, it receives SPDIF digital audio input and sends back to PC through USB

Yep I saw that. I think it might actually work if it's compatible with MacOS (you never know these days..)

Is it the U24 XL that BEAT16 linked? Admittedly it's twice my budget but it looks exactly like the kind of thing I need. Small, compact and only uses one USB cable. Might save up for it. Any other non-chintzy specialized interfaces like this one or is this the only option?

That's why I wrote it down under the post of @Plendix.

The company ESI tries to offer everything a little cheaper. But is Made In Germoney manufactured in China. So 89 EUR is the lower limit for a new audio interface. For less money you can not produce. Also has newer MAC drivers. Also, if you order from thomann have 3 years warranty and 30 days money back. I would just save a little, then you have something new which then lasts longer time.

S/PDIF is the format used by digital coax connections. If you need both coax and optical inputs (all of them are S/PDIF), I believe Tascam's US-366 was one of the latest (if not the latest) consumer-class interface with inputs and even outputs. However, only one digital input can be used at a time.
I don't remember any interface like this with two digital channels.
