Yes i have talked about that for example, but somebody else thought about it before.

I mean now Cubase/Nuendo are ready to be used in a classroom easily, you get a 90days trial for the term and after that, when you like it, you can buy it. Thats how Ableton is doing.

This can so much improve the sales impact for Steinberg. Because who would test or learn a DAW, when you have to first get a physical dongle for it, only to later decide - Damn i dont need that thing. Thats investment, which keeps students from using it ...

I guess with that out of the way we will see increasing popularity of Cubase on tutorials and masterclasses, schools, etc.

Yeah, I think they could tolerate Steinbug, well, being Steinbug. I don't think they could tolerate the critical mass of people being unable to authorize, organizations hating the impracticality, no hardware USB ports, and the performance hit. Likely that order? It was out of Steinbugs' hands, anyway, thankfully.

    dont take it personal but
This steinbug stuff is over hyped, its always up and down for every dev/company
The PC systems are well balanced right now. Across all OS´s and Daws.
For bigger Organizations its probably a question of deployment and usage + C.O.O.
The Market shifted and Steinberg - Yamaha a reacting to it, there is no strong arming anyone.

The two are well integrated as you see with things like Nuage(yamaha) or Steinbergs audio-interfaces like axr4

When Steinberg started, there was hardly any competition, they almost had a monopoly. The money was flowing in.

maybe in the 80´s but there was always competition and the biggest is still Pro tools/ logic in the Recording Market:)
in Mastering? Don't know but it seems Sadie is out (lets see what Tracktion are doing there) but Pyramix found its Niche(s)
and Wavelab, Sequoia & Avid are strong in Broadcasting.
Schools are another battleground, Big fight between iOS, Android, PC and Mac
Apple made big Strides thanks to Steve Jobs push in Amerika late 90´s early 00´s.

    i would say there's lots to gain:shalom:

Almost though for a long time EMAGIC was top of the food chain then Steinberg levelled the playing field. Both were originally notation, MIDI and sequencing software. Notator (EMAGIC) Became Logic then Logic Audio and Cubase, SAW and companies followed suit - the rest is written in history. Cubase then became popular because Notator was completely geared towards musicians and while not critical to make it work, you had to know how to score music to get the most out of it. Cubase was more end-user friendly towards people who did not have to read music to get the most out of it.

In the 80's a software vendor told me that Logic main creator and Emagic company's founder, Gerhard Lengeling, was at first a Steinberg collaborator / developer who didn't agree with Steinberg orientations / choices (perhaps when they released PRO 24 for Atari ST, that I've used extensively at the times), I haven't found traces of this collaboration, only the article of German wikipedia which tells that Steinberg and him knew each other very well (google trad):

It seems the more we learn, the more find out how truly incestuous the music industry is/was

In this old interview of Emagic (far before they was buyed by Apple), you'll read that they worked also very closely with DIgidesign, the creators of Pro Tools.

I see this strange parallelism between the two companies: one buyed by Avid, the other by Apple. After that, the Pro Audio world changed radically. The competition begun to be tough and not always fair.*

Bye-bye, friendly relationships, mutual help and cross-collaborations, hello, marketing, business and communication war!

    - - -
    * Perhaps it's the very reason why Steinberg put itself in the hands of Yamaha. It gives three giants: Avid, Yamaha and Apple, who, as in the myth of "Gog and Magog" from the Bible, fight against each other in a colossal combat, which should surely have collateral damages we don't know.

What many do not see is the deregulated financial market, today the profits no longer flow into the real economy for new investments and jobs, but the profits go to the stock market, responsible is a new caste of managers in the executive suites, they should magically invest the money profitably.
