I f*cked up a WHOLE backup because a SINGLE byte was wrong in the incremental chain ...
    Not again.

I prefer a new full/differential scheme every month.
Because one month is enough (for me) to realize something is wrong.

I may have explained it wrong. The Restore with the same system drive with a reboot doesn't run Windows at all when restoring. It only runs a mini-boot restore program.
The only real difference with a separate boot device (besides having less options) is that it writes this mini-boot restoring environment before you restart in the system partition.

Thanks for your info on Terabyte system software. It's on my "to - check" geek list, now higher thanks to you

Of course, and probably all imaging sw do that.

I think that on the run restore isn't much feasible, they would have done it already.
Just imagine, you are working to a complex excel sheet for two days, you finish it, close it, take a hot chocolate (I don't like coffee:bleh:) and when you come back you see a windows saying "Your backup of 3 days ago was successfully restored!" - OK it's a silly thing to store personal files in C:, but happens.
    Goodbye sheet!
    Hulk triggered.

BTW I set mail folder outside C:, in past I restored C: image but forgot to restore syncback mail folder, next mail backup deleted the recent one.
