perhaps a simple question for you skilled folks,
I'm noob when it comes to sound production/design,

howto make this sound, at around 0:49 and further?:

is it some sort of arpeggio synth or automated filtering, or just modified guitar?

    thanks

I would suggest to try playin with a synth that allows syncing a second osc (which would be called follower) to your main osc (leader) and playin/modulatin with the pitch of the follower. This would result in a seemingly harmonic/melodic sequence like you hear in the example, without the main osc ever changin its pitch. To clarify: I think that the Main Pitch in this Sequence doesn't change/is static, while the follower pitch which is synced goes wild.

it's almost like a heavily distorted 303. but not a 303. yes to with a follower. so my guess is a virus acid patch. what else is new.... the one similar to this right? :)

Start simple with a a saw wave, a Sn'H (sample and hold) LFO assigned to a lowpass highpass filter cutoff with high resonance and run it into saturation/distortion. Sync the LFO rate to tempo and 16th-notes.
    Edit: Typo: highpass, not lowpass.

I cant believe this nerdy complicated answers. The principle is up and down modulated sound. Use the modulation wheel or edit it in the editor. Make sure the range is set wide enough. Thats it.

excuse me sir, but how the fuck do you get anywhere close to the sound from op's video using your tips? in fact I just see some "modulation" tip and nothing else in your post, which for sure isn't anywhere close in helping to achieve this fairly complex aciding sound
    "just use modulation bro" lmao

Because, as I said initially, you can "start simple" and get in the ballpark doing it the way I described it. It's basically the filter cutoff modulation that does the heaviest lifting. It probably sounds "complex" because of the 16th-note S'n'H LFO (if you want to go "complex" you can ofc automate it by hand if you want).
I followed my own example and made this pretty quickly:

I made a typo in the initial post which I've corrected (to "highpass").

the original sounds a 303, you would let it squelch for your 4000 bucks or whatever.

it sounds like you got it baxter. well, as close as you cn guess with other layers on it's mix.

I grew up listening to Acid House on underground/alternative radio back in the late 80's. I even bought a tb303 back in the days (before they started to become insanely expensive) and I ran it through a trusty Proco Rat pedal. Lovely stuff! I sold the 303 but I still have the RAT. :)

As for the specific sound in the video it's more like some top roll-off, adding some chorus and doing some delay send automation. You can sculpt a lot of the tone with EQ before it hits the overdrive/saturation/distortion.

well, your thread and baxter's reply have reminded me how powerful the logic modulator Midi fx plugin really can be.

    thanks :)
