Masters are dead. There's no master anymore.

Successful jack-of-all-trades are very rare, and a division of labour is the generally accepted way of doing things in the financially lucrative side of the music business.

Ah yep. What would you suggest I take a look at? I am not familiar with the subscription based ones yet. I need something practical pertaining to the complete start to finish process. Is Sonic Academy worth the money? I see they have done some cubase related projects, which is ideal.

Do people use Reaktor much these days? Kind of niche, no? I tried once to get into it... haha but couldn't stick to it.

Masterclasses are a good idea to see how others are wokring and getting ideas down. To get tips they are certainly not so great as i saw.

I fallen asleep now to days in a row to Mat Zo explaining in a tutorial how he produces DNB. It very cool to watch him creating something in Phase plant ... did i learn something apart from how he does things? Probably not - but its good entertainement for me.

I am fine with certain masterclasses, wouldnt i pay big $$$ for them, NO. But if it lays around for free i grab and watch them.

Masterclass. The word invokes an all-encompassing training regimen where you get the absolute most for your money from the proverbial horses' mouth.

    This is never the case.

'Masterclass' is misused like 'freedom' has been in recent times.

Most Masterclass training courses are poorly put together money sucks with some famous persons name attached. Rarely are they even worth the money asked.

    Are Masterclasses Worth It?

Only to the people making them.

Not much found in a "masterclass" series these days that cant be found with a simple search on youtube.

It was always my understanding that a "masterclass" was supposed to be for students who already excel and can't be taken further by ordinary teachers. It's Miles Davis putting Herbie Hancock in his band. It's getting an art critique from Picasso. It's on such a high level that if your shit isn't already more together than 95% of people in your field you won't even understand what they're talking about. It's not supposed to be "highly regarded person drops meaningless crumbs to losers for easy quick cash".

People with an hour or two of looking at videos like these will never become master. Becoming a master requires years of practice and deep thinking.

Despite all the growth of technology and the Internet, there is no real master in it. If you want to search for real master, you should look for these people in history, not on the Internet. It's proven to me that these people aren't present on the Internet.

A deep understanding of music doesn't happen with Mix and Mastering. Real music requires elements that are not deeply taught in videos. Real masters are like ghosts that are not visible to the eye.

No one knows where these people live.

    Sad truth

Similar thing happens with some facebook groups a while ago (and still going) when people share their music with other producers but real listeners/potential fans aren't there. Producers who make music for other producers.

When they first started doing these, they were priced/sold per "class" and were quite expensive. Now you can get a sub for 20$a month.
The sites by NonLinear Educating are 20$ a month, or 12$ a month if you pay for a year. They are Macprovideo, Ask Video/Audio. Groove3 is $100 for a year (on sale now). Either of these options would be better, imo. More and better content, and are what these Masterclass AUDIO videos are basically a book report of anyway. The Cooking or Welding ones might be great; but they don't get torrented. Masterclasses are also kind of cool because you get to check out how a favorite artist works or whatever. But in terms of educational value, they are a joke comparatively.

this is the ASK dashboard of current audio subjects:

I watched the Deadmau5 masterclass and it was literally the same advice you get on youtube just brought to you by a more popular producer

Hot take: Youtube education is actually your enemy if you don't know what you are doing - it takes skill to select videos beforehand, otherwise you stumble upon the same bunch of "music has no rules bro just use your ears and don't forget to EQ the kick at 400hz" type of people parroting truisms turning the site more or less into the human centipede of music education. Oof that was a hard one, maybe a bit hyperbolic but there's definitely some truth to that.

Ideally yes, but many professional musicians started playing guitar, bass, drums... because they couldn't afford session musicians and still continue to do so to this day.
Or the risk management thing where musicians start engineering as side hustle, also not too uncommon.

@ironmother from my experience: theory books are in-depth, videos are mostly bullshit

In-depth theory books are like Programming Language Specification manuals (not written for 21st century's Instagramers). If people could read those books and put them into practice, music would go to other ways.

I'd still like to watch it to find out what he thinks is so wrong with using an SSL compressor in a dance music track. The likelihood of this actually occurring is about 0 in the first place, unless he is talking about some plugin. And then of course, a compressor is better than no compressor and if SSL is your only option....so I really don't see what he is even on about.

I'm sure this is covered in-depth and with things like facts involved, and I'm up for a laugh. Olav Basoski has no problem putting a G on a house music kick drum. I guess he is doing it wrong.
