Apple is like Gibson guitars. Their prices are just nuts for these things!

It would seem that the Mac mini may be dead. If so, long live the Mac Studio M1X & M1 Ultra...

All kidding aside, the price has effectively doubled for a Mac Mini replacement.

I am expecting a starting price of $7,900 or $8,900 minimum for the next Mac Pro Modular (cheese grater replacement). would not be at all surprised if Apple asked for $10,000 as a starting point.

There is no info on the Apple Support page yet for the new models. They also do not fully identify the capabilities of each port. Specifically the HDMI (2.0 or 2.1) & the SD Card slot (II V2 or, II V3). Not even a use manual.

With the premium Apple charges, I would expect full disclosure for compatibility using current products in the wild.

Also another mystery not addressed so far...Can external Thunderbolt PCIe enclosures be used now?

No, I can't see them killing the mac mini as it will be their entry-level desktop machine. Plus there are plenty of M1 laptops & the iMac in the range.

More chance of the Cheese Grater being dead... As for Cost Well, you know what they say, buy once invest well, and go forth and prosper.

    • They will disclose all the Specs, makes no sense not to? It's only been 12 hours.
    • PCI is a dead technology. Hanging antiquated PCI cards in a chassis off this monster and complaining would be ridiculous logic right up there with "does it run win7?". I ditched my GPU graphics cards when the M1 come out while they were still worth something to a Bitcoin farmer and seriously who runs Protools PCI anymore when you have Lots of thunderbolt/fast usb options from the likes of UAD ect? So many options for distributed processing Like UAD or a NUC/ Mac Mini running Audiogridder windows over ethernet.

But... the PC users demand specs! They are concerned about our Logic benchmark results or something. How very caring of them. :)

I love it. However, my current bottleneck is between my NAS and iMac Pro. Apparently 10gb throughput isn't enough.

And as for the Gibson remark...well, perhaps you've never played a good one. Personally, Id choose no other weapon.

I've indeed played and owned some very good Gibson's but that doesn't negate my feeling that they're way over priced nowadays!

Ive never understood this concept of "overpriced". In a consumer driven capitalist society where choice is virtually limitless market forces demand that prices are kept in check by lower priced alternatives and consumer demand. A Gibson guitar costs exactly what a Gibson guitar costs. It is neither overpriced nor underpriced.

    It is simply the price.

Apple may or may not kill off the entry level. They do prefer to be seen as 'The' premium brand at a premium price. Thus the pondered question.

    Yes invest well. Not blindly...

The cheese grater will be replaced by something. But What? We will know for sure with the next Apple event.

First. It is their technology and, they want 'Pros' to buy/upgrade to their new tech. Why not give us 'Pros', all of the info we need to make decisions around currently available/owned products so that 'Pros', can make decision of about what is required or not to continue their workflow with minimal disruption.

As for PCIe. There are those who have made investments in PCIe based DSP tech. Avid anyone?

PCIe enclosures also offer a way to expand storage as an example. And again, for those who have already made the investment with older Macs or PCs, it would be as simple as plugging in a cable & apllying settings as needed.

Not to stray to far off topic, I have owned & played many Gibson Les Pauls, SGs, various Archtops (1965 ES-175 last one owned).

Have owned & used Apples from the Apple II, 32bit Mac, Power PC & Intel Based Mac Books. There were some dogs that did not hunt in some years.

Question...Are there currently any Thunderbolt 4 NAS systems that proved better performance than the 10Gbe J45?

There is only one Apple made computer. Remember that sued the clone market into non-existence. So "choice" is not really an option. A hackintosh is an option, not a choice for a true & supported Apple ecosystem.

I agree and I am not even a Gibson guy.

I don't think they are good value, but they aren't necessarily any less expensive than the MM, Martins and PRS I chose for myself either.

Things cost what they cost when one is dealing with professional tools as luxury items.

    ----- back on topic ----

I am more interested in the RAM and light upgrade-ability. A machine can be kept in service a lot longer if RAM is upgradeable and for a render and print machine the overall drop in performance a little RAM latency adds isn't as significant as replacement.

There is no upgrade capability because the ram is soldered to the CPU. You buy however much you need at purchase time. Same for the SSD size.

You could add more SSD/Drives through the plethora of Thunderbolt ports externally.

No, I assume not, but I don't care with that type of Grunt its pretty much gonna handle most of what I'd throw at it for the next 5 years. Not really interested in looking under the hood anymore, just wanna write and make content.
I fusxcking hate Nas Technology.. I threw mine away and just have Chasis with Hard drives in Raid or Drives that I store and put in a brace when I need them. Nas is a PIA..

As for Gibson.. I gave owned many classic and collectible guitars some I've sold ( to get the deposit on my first apartment) some I've kept.. It's about playing them and keeping. If you're complaining about the price you cant afford it, don't want it enough, and ultimately don't deserve it.

Yeah Unified Ram and this kind of processor spec on the Ultra make the Ram issue kind of irrelevant because it doesn't address Ram like an X86. The Ram is soldered to the board.

Wasn't thinking about the Studio when I wrote that - more of the yet to be released MacPro on their platfrom.

I just looked and prices aren't really that bad for what you are getting

You can get 128GB ram for $800 which is about 50 bucks more than it would cost raw and I can live with that though would like see 256GB as an option. For what it is you can get a decent setup for video post for about 5800.

I know about external TB/UsbC drives I've a few going.

I've still got time to decide and wait to hear more about how their Apple SoC MacPros are going to be built but honestly these little studio boxes probably already give my 2 year old MacPro a run for it's money and I can probably recoup a good part of the cost by selling the GPU out of it.
