Thats likely just a conspiracy theory? But how hip is Cubase still under younger producers? I mean if i wanted to start, i either maybe had found reaper, FL, Live or S1 on windows, on MacOS additional Logic X due to Garageband maybe? (excuse me if i forgot something here, there are for sure other good daws, which makes it easier to demo or just find a blessed version!)

And for Cubase in the past i had to taggle a lot of obsticles to get a trial version working. Or others above made this very simple.

My point is, that Cubase is maybe no attracting enough new users? So simplify maybe?
Also the previous attempts VR made, to hollow out the eLic protection and then finally releasing various awsome attempts to make parts of the protected catelogue useable.

Maybe new strategy by Steinberg? I mean would i even consider Cubase now? No i wouldnt.
I mean Reason Studios made similar attempt to simplify protection by removing codemeter.

In the end it has to be easy to use online/offline and thats maybe not the case anymore?

Those are all the points, which come to my mind.

Its cool to see another cool different way how C12 is patched. Great!

Patched? I think that hasn't been done perfectly yet. Because there are too many dongle/auth function calls throughout the code. And I don't think Steinberg rewrote the whole code but now instead of dongle just calls a function in a DLL ...
Or this function itself has been cracked. Hard to believe in that short period of time :dunno:

Yeah, I would as well suspect the typical Cubase user to be >30 of age and a little more $ as average DAW user because of Cubase' high price point.

Now one almost has to fear that Steinberg will reintroduce the dongle after the groups have proven to them how easy it is to crack a pure software solution. Too much, too fast guys.
That would be a similar mess as with Vengeance Avenger.

Btw.: I installed and authorized v12 on my laptop this afternoon and it was really easy. Now I'm really comfortable with Cubase. Taking the dongle out of my main machine for mobile use was sth I really hated.

    This is incredibly fast. Haha
Seriously doubt that Steinberg will bring back the dongle protection since everyone asked in the first place. Probably just stronger encryption

One has to unplug from it all if you want to get anything done, it can be devastating for creativity.

Respect and thank you to VR! But I'll stick to Studio One, a much more intuitive DAW.

I normally never answer this kind of question but light-heartedly, now it has been cracked in a stable fashion for possibly the first time since version 5, no matter the opinions, or whatever the numbers, the new users will be much less on a purchase scale.

I think so too, that being the only uncracked DAW was now working against them (at least in Steinbergs/yamahas minds), loosing sales to cracked competitors whose users then stayed with that choice when going legit. I think Steinberg decided to be crackable again! They must have known since their soft elicencer was fully cracked by VR for quit a long while and they did ban legit users with also that crack installed (so they knew about it and could detect it).
I went from cracked cubase to legit too, on Atari that is, I had a legit Atari version and now legit 11 pro.

I still don't trust any of this. How about this conspiracy theory: Steinberg only removed the dongle to incentivize scene groups to release internal eLicenser cracks. Once they've been released, Steinberg will fix their weaknesses and then re-introduce the dongle. It's all an elaborate deception :woot:

But on the other hand, could just as well be that they realized that the modern DAW consumers were running away from them, and have been for quite a while. I'd certainly like to check out Cubase now that they removed the dongle, but I don't trust them to keep the dongle away for good.

I'm also not convinced that the VR or TC versions will continue working for long. I can't believe Steinberg's protection scheme would be so easily circumventable.

It's easier than you think, I admire your imagination though, very creative of you. Here are a few market basics.

1.) If your product is no longer in sufficient demand, you disappear from the market.

2.) You have to be either cheaper than the competition or more innovative than the competition.

3.) Every company saves where it can, so that it makes enough profit to pay its staff, the rent, the insurances and the taxes.

4.) As you have already realised, they are losing customers because of the dongle and what is worse, they are not gaining enough customers because of the dongle.

5,) The software professionals who invented this dongle have a very high level of expertise, but this expertise can also be found among the crackers. In short, almost everything that is software-based can and will be hacked.

6.) The hourly wage of a graduate software programmer is very high, so they will not change what they are introducing now because the labour costs are too high.

Yep, I only read a bit about it, hence the interrogation quote. I also think there's more than patching in that release. In any case, seems to be the biggest difference between the two groups.
Several groups/cr*ckers were after Cubase for the last years, not only VR. I remember some buggy but still pretty good attempts with only a deal-breaker flaw. Was it delay compensation?
Perhaps TC and VR took a different path along the way. Who knows.

For PC there seems to be no real difference.
But atm Cubase 12 is not really without dongle because the extension and VST I bought are bound to the dongle. So Cubase v12 starts without dongle, but still needs the overhead for the dongle because it makes dongle calls to check the extension.. I installed.

So v11 start takes 8.5s and v12 6.5s not a significant diff. And of course it differs by count of extensiions and power of the used PC

Someone should readjust the long startup so it would start as fast as FL or Reaper.
6.5 seconds is still too long, it scans for newly added plugins, this can be avoided.

Some people might remember wayyyyyyyy.... back to Cubase 3 and H20 - Legitimate users, myself included, ended up using the H20 version because the legitimate version kept crashing and the cracked version did not. I am a legit user but I have to say I tested the cracked version of 12 on another machine and a slower machine at that. The cracked version loads faster. Work that one out? For me and perhaps people who remember Cubase 3, it's almost Deja Vu.

Also - if you are having issues with your controller being detected and there is a script for it there on installation, check out the Steinberg forums. There is a Sysex numbering issue in some of the scripts. Some members have updated what to change. Not all controllers but many.
