I know but it defeats the main purpose as advertised by Steinberg which is : you can use your DAW on different machines, one at home, one at work and one on the go...

Sorry but no. In this configuration, you'll have only access to one DAW...as usual. The other two will be barebones only...:(

Adding something useful and unusual, straight from Steinberg.
If you OWN any Cubase version from Cubase 4 to Cubase 10.5 - The upgrade is the same price for all - It may vary from country to country I do not know.
P.S - It is unlikely they will phase out VST2 immediately. I have never seen any large company do that with anything they created without plenty of warning and a cut-off point/date.

Follow the link, then click Buy Cubase Pro 12, (possibly again on the next screen) then click 'Updates and upgrades', then select what is appropriate for you. to see for yourself.

    https://www.steinberg.net/cubase/new-features/

The crossgrade price however I believe could do with some work.

I don't personally use any other elicenser-authorised stuff other than Cubase, so as this is a non-issue for me, I hadn't really considered it before. But yeah, if you use a lot of other Steinberg stuff, that's def annoying.

Hopefully they'll roll out the new authorisation for the other stuff quickly.

Vst2 still works as normal on Windows, Intel Macs, and Rosetta. M1 Native folks lose it though.

The few vst2 plugins I still have are running just fine on my W11 desktop, and Intel MBP.

I would imagine this won't change until large companies like UAD make the switch to vst3, and they don't seem to have any particular plans to do so rn.

Pretty sure I've seen Steinberg mention that they'll continue support for about 2 years, so through to like Cubase 14.

Do they have a proper vector scaling GUI yet? Or is the GUI still stuck in 2005.

I really wanna try it... Looks like the new version added some stuff as good as cableguys shaperbox. I wanted to buy shaperbox soon, but if it's already included.... The other updates look really promising, too... At least much better than the 10.5 or 11 updates.

VST2 even though Steinberg invented it, is institutionalized in nearly every DAW other than ProTools (which can use BlueCat's Patchwork to load any vst). So I hear you and agree. I think they may do it slowly. You'd hope so to enable the third-party developers a decent opportunity to shift their plugins / bundles to VST3. I cannot see them doing anything sudden. They have already created a shockwave even though it is certainly their right as the creator of VST. I doubt they will willingly make permanent enemies.

I upgraded and now C11 won't work, for some reason. Maybe needs a restart. Or just Steinbug being Steinbug? It gives weird ("not upgradable") msg in eLicenser. Despite being upgraded!

Anyway, the new MIDI remote mapping is great and srsly overdue, finally have some use for old bluetooth controllers that were gathering dust! Seems pretty simple, although it didn't recog two buttons (out of two!) on my keyboard ctrlr. Seems to want CCs. Looks great, like Adobe did a cut-down Lemur. Good to have user / factory (!) presets for most things nao. Also (I guess because no dongle) they've got a realtime bar in the performance widget. Seems there was quite a performance hit for all that (non) decryption. Anyone want a dongle? =D

PITA that they moved the input transformer button, they literally removed the (useful, overfamiliar =) lil thing and didn't replace it with anything; just lengthened the inspector gadget, which seems too logical and esoteric for Steinbug! XD

They added a windoze scaling setting, under hidpi, which (hopefully) will fix all (likely a) bug with the gui. Fingers crossed. I guess the plus with Steinbug trying to "textify" everything, is that it makes resizing the gui less fraught at hires, I guess?

Also, still only 4 midi sends and input transforms. Still have no idea why? Plus, the activation took ridiculously long (over 5m )=

Thats exactly what its supposed to say. You used your license to upgrade already, so now its no longer eligible and you cant cheat the system and get another free copy of C12. If the app isn't opening, thats not the reason, 11 is still running just fine alongside 12 here.

Your activation was pretty quick haha. The servers were getting hit so hard this morning (about 8am PST) it took me about 10 minutes to download and install the new version and the new instrument updates, and then about an hour and a half to get the elicenser updated/grace period activated/download code in the mail/etc.

Wow, downloading was fine, makes a change. I can't get C11 working on my work laptop, but it works fine on an old potato desktop. And now says that C11 is a legacy product! :D Quite a shitshow, must be related to either new activation mgr, C12 install or eLc! At least we can colorize (midi/audio/we) tracks automatically nao. Although that was prolly a feature already!

Anyway, observations about C12. The midi controller editor is a bit awkward to use in practice, and there's no save button (or delete button that's easy to find)! It is still fucking excellent to make old, dusty controllers usable! When you load for the first time, it takes ~10s for anything to be clickable, which feels even longer than it sounds! Grrr. Kinda gone from 0s pause (10.5) ~3/4s pause (C11) hours of frantic clicking (C12). Cubase has crashed once, so far, when editing and fiddling around w/ bluetooth controllers. So par for the course w/ Steinbug.

So for shits and giggles, I managed to get the b25 soft elicenser licenses onto my USB dongle and get that registered in MySteinberg, including the Cubase Elements 12 license. I realise this could tank my dongle and account but I don't have any purchased licenses so what the hey. Anyway, even with it showing in MySteinberg CE12 cannot find a license. So it seems the license generated by the b25 isn't of any use after all with the new protection.

All the “12” versions are now Steiny Licensing, not the Elic version, but at least the current licences by VR work alongside and appear to play nicely for now.

Any feedback from Mac intel side if the new protection system means a lite daw?
Would be nice to have the same performance as Presonus Studio One.

What seems truly mental to me is, if after all these years with it being uncracked, that it gets the new licence system and is 0day’d. I can’t believe they have gone from a super strong protection to being wiped out.

Is it actually the PRO version? or the same extended elements that almost has the pro functionality?

I'm testing the V.R of Cubase Pro now. I have to admit: I think it's done extremely well at the moment. Almost legit. But I still have to test it extensively and over time. Huge congratulations V.R, for you and your wonderful Ukrainian people.

    This didn't age well. lol.
    Congrats VR on this achievement.

I'd love to hear from people who've used it more extensively and can comment on how it runs and if it is actually the Pro version, as some comments on the other place seem to suggest it might be an Elements version.

Still, cool to see this here, and so glad to know that VR is alright!
