Old news... But a great synth!

 

tried to use this over the years and never was able to keep it in a project for various reasons, the knobs aren't useful for visual feedback at all. the devs were married to the rate thing when basically all that does is invert the value of a control. no reason to keep it that way when every other synth's knobs are exactly the opposite. doxxed seems semi abandoned. However i miss my TX81z and


Try Sonicbits Exakt which has a much better interface.

Is it possible to load DX7 patches with Exakt?

Aurora FM is another option for DX7 patches, sadly it's not free, but it's rather cheap. FM8 and Dexed have the best patch browsers. The patch browser from Image Line Sytrus and Arturia DX7 sucks ass. Don't know the Plogue instrument yet, but many people say it's the best emulation.

 

Dexed is ok, until you try Plogue OPS7. OPS is the most accurate by a big margin.

 

don't know. But as for Dexed, I found that after listening to a thousand DX7 patches that they all start sounding really samey and the prospect of combing through all the banks out there is like playing tic tac toe.

 

Exact is not like a DX7 as it only have 4 oscillators. It is closer to a TX81Z.
So it cannot load original DX7 patches.

Aurora FM from Audio Nebula, sounds good, and parameters organization make it practical but the GUI contrast (white, yellow and even red!! letters on black) make it unusable for me. I wonder why dev does not offer an alternative skin.

Yes the graphical user interface is very accessible, but the sound is very poor. One of the worst plugins.

Definitely not. An FM synth is mode up of Operators, each of them consisting of oscillators. Depending on the routing an oscillator can be a carrier providing a signal which can be affected by the audio signal of another oscillator routed to it, which is called a modulator in this case.

Take the routing matrix from the first screenshot of Dexed (pronounced Dee ex'd):

Operators 4,5,6 and 2 are Modluators in this routing
4,5,6 modulate Op 3 (below in level) which is send out in the world
Op 6 is also self-modulating by feeding back its own signal (ring modulation)
Op 1 is modulated by Op 2 and then also send to the output.

This complex routing is not something you can do with a synth with 2 oscillators. You can use one oscillator to affect another but that's about it.
