I never really cared for NI plugins, but I finally was like fuck it, I'll pick up a few of their f4reebies... only to be reminded why I hated NI plugins: they create their own directory, and with the freebies, I cant see any way to install it anywhere else. Ur not given the option. But I found a "clever" way to get around this, just create a shortcut NI folder (windows) and drop that folder in my VST folder. Worked like a charm... until it didn't. One day randomly, NI plugs stopped showing up in Live. I did a lil investigating, thinking it was maybe a permissions thing? Turns out I can now only DIRECTLY use the shortcut folder in Ableton, but not use my global VST folder with the shortcut folder in it anymore. I don't know when this happened, maybe updating to 11.1? This happening to anyone else?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found my ansnwer. Ableton is a fucktard company. *sigh*

You are talking about Ableton? the company that refuses to give you the option to locate plugins that are NOT on the default system folders? I mean, they give you the option for only 2 (if i'm not wrong) custom folders... LMAO, seriously Ableton, 2022...

yes there was a change with 11.1
but why don*t you just put the NI VSTs into the global VST folder?
should work with the correct permissions.

I don't use Ableton, but that surprises me. Can't you use a symlink or something? You'd hear this complaint a lot if it was true. Usually it indicates user error in workflow or something else. I'd rather just have them all on my system drive because it is an ssd anyway so it doesn't really matter. but I wouldn't mind knowing. :)

yeah, that part I wrote about not being able to change install location with NI freebies... unless u mean actually removing the vsts from their folder and dropping them in the global vst folder... I guess I could, but I refuse to submit to Ableton's fuck up! Lol

Ableton says its bug in 11.1 that will be rectified in the next release. Like they had this shit working perfectly and fucked it up. Ugghhhhhh so annoying. it was working fine until they messed it up, that's why u don't hear much of it, and yeah I could go the symlink route, but. it's for NI freebies, and I really don't care that much, but it is frustrating that a company would remove that feature. What next? let's get rid of the metronome!!

Couldn't you use BlueCat Patchwork? that would be very easy solution if it's only a few plugins.

..and by freebies you mean 'real freebies' or crckd stuff? Bc with legit you specify VST(2) folder in NativeAccess..

Anyway I have a couple of symlink folders in my VST2 global folder and the plugs within work as expected with Live 11.1 and W10

The VST3 story is another story. Not being able to rename and sort folders/plugins my own way is utter crap

By freebies, I mean... freebies. And no, with Native Access u cannot specify the folder u want to install into. I'm literally installing again as we speak, u see the product(s) not installed, u click to download and install them, no choices pop up for the directory or anything. It just installs, to the directory it chooses. Which is why I said u can't tell it which folder u want to install into. Maybe u were using an older build of Native Access?

As I said, it's a bug in 11.1 that Ableton says they will address in the next update. Case closed. Symlink is a workaround, as I also said, but... no. I really don't care much for NI stuff anyways, I did make a few sketches of stuff using Reaktor player, but I'll wait until Ableton fixes their issue. I'm just more pointing out stupid shit by NI and Ableton.

No. NA checks for the latest version when it is launched. I think you can not (easily) bypass that.
In the upper right corner beside the NI logo there is the user icon with access to account and preferences:

If this is not what you were asking, then I got it all wrong and, well ...excusez-moi ;)

Logic's AUValtool can be very unfriendly, if you let it. The only thing you don't have to worry about is it scanning your plugins.

Reaper took the ableton needle out of my arm and opened my eyes to the reality that although ableton taught me a lot, it-s just a school kids DAW.

"The options file [Options.txt] contains an unknown option '-NoVstStartupScan' which will be ignored."

Thanks Ableton. That helps a lot, with "go and make youself some coffe" startup times...

routing, cpu usage, startup time, cost, programability, support, updates, tutorial videos....

Time needed for Reaper to (deleted "reaper-vstplugins") rescan/reindex all plugins (1782545641651), is time needed for Live to "starting Max" prepare, before searching for (no) new plugins which can, and will, every time, take some time. It's not "Reaper (or...) fanboy" point of view, just "Live fanboy" hope Live will someday, in version 69.13b7 feasibly, resolve (by listening users) issues dating from version 1. Laughable in beginning, "gridsound daw" javascript daw Bitwig, is more serious (competitive to Live, and/or...) with every minor update, not major version. Perhaps Ableton can learn something from 'competitors', but we all know they can't, right?
