Sony Walkman is back: meet the new audiophile grade MP3 players ....
don't ask me how much they cost... ...... I can well imagine that this model will be a very good collector's item.

Rekindling the legacy, the Sony Walkman has arrived in two models (NW-WM1AM2 and NW-WM1ZM2) with Hi-Res Audio, DSD, LDAC, and MQA support. Aimed at audiophiles in need of a standalone MP3 player, both support modern streaming services and formats, and the more costly NW-WM1ZM2 has been designed using copper and gold parts for optimal audio fidelity.

Still rockin my SanDisk Sport Clip with 8GB internal and 32GB miniSD - i does everything i need and has after all these years still good 15h of playback time. And its very small and leigthweight with 30g or so. New ones cost 50€ with 32GB storage.

I never saw a point to buy a sony walkman or discman - even there was heavy marketing in the media around millennium.

@BEAT16 are these rumors real? those prices are insane and i mean you still have phones, which have this kind of storage and then can also play videos (Full HD x265 or even 4K), browser in the web, play games, ...
I dont know what Sony wants with that ... prices are to insane compared to the low storage you get.

(The funny reaction is more intended at Sony, not the user who have posted this.)

It feels all just like a marketing stunt to me, gold aside here.

So strip the gold or whatever glorified expensive material, how much would you pay for it?

i think the components used are not china standard things.... high-quality components are installed and that drives up the costs..it has always been the case that quality always had its price...it's no different here

When the first walkman came out 1979 they were top notch in quality and sound. I was really enraptured. But I couldn't afford it as I was a Apprentice back then.

And this Walkman is 20 years too late and 3,500€ too expensive.

But it looks really nice & worthy and some gadget collectors will buy it. In Sony's place, I would have made it even much more expensive, so that a reasonable rich idiot surcharge (sth like Gold plated capacitors for $10.000) comes into the cash register.

yes its atleast 10 years to late. I mean in technology we came a lot further for 3,5k€ This could have had 2TB or even more storage today.

Thats a publicity stunt or they are just damn late. I mean remmeber in 2004 or so, the iPOD with 20GB of storage? (i didnt :D) this was something and i was close buying 300€ for such a thing. But today nahhh. I checked microSD cards today, found one with 1TB storage for ~170€. I am pretty sure i find a portable player, which can use this card. One TB thats 1/4 of my whole Library.

I mean in 1979 they were groundbreaking with a portable tape player, deep in the ages of 8-track i guess, but now its just ("old") overpriced tech with a bunch of glorified gold/copper.

you know, if they were really serious about this they'd be making a deal with Neil Young to have him featured there and be the face of their campaign. One of the few cats that's been bitching about audio quality in players and streamed music for ages.

also yeah, Mp3 and audiophile. right...

I hate this modern elitist price gouging snake oil business. When you can buy one behringer clone synth for 250 euros vs this over priced crap.

I expect Monster Cable to come out with a $500 charging cable for this because if you'll buy this you're their kind of sucker.
