I think I've heard this melody in a movie, or possibly a song, but I can't figure out where from, and it's driving me crazy

My rendition was pretty far off though, so I'm surprised you recognized it

 

Although if it is a little different from your interpretation I think it has the same vibe, I'm glad I was able to help, I know what it feels like to have a song stuck in your mind and not know what it is

I wish there was a industry standard of loudness, i also hate it when music is louder then voices :P

 

Totally get where you're coming from! Inconsistent audio levels can definitely be annoying, especially when the music drowns out the dialogue. Have you checked out any new movies out now where the audio balance is spot on? Finding that perfect mix can make all the difference in enjoying a film!
