This is one area where the tools make a difference.

I had to upgrade my soldering setup considerably from just an adjustable 100w iron to something with a stand, better tips, solder holders, etc. In the end it was worth it for me, the new setup came in at about $130USD, which isn't much considering the things I am repairing don't even exist anymore and I like using them.

Buy a good cable and good plug (like Neutrik or similar). Do it properly while you are doing it.

I actually think it's better if everything is at our place, because in 20 years most of the links will run into the void.
Since it is not desired - I have deleted it again. [IMG]

Since the strands are coated, this is normal. You'll have to get the wire down to bare copper before you can get a clean solder joint. Burning the coating off with a lighter does work well, but also finish cleaning with some fine steel wool to remove any remaining material.

I believe we're dealing with this stuff ?

I dealt with this some moths ago .
Best Tips: Short burst. As hot as possible. Use a tweezer . Classic solderlead ( 60/40 not the stuff with 99% Silver )
But these Cables are such BS that there are most of the time multiple breaks (so if the first try didn't work replace the wire against something better with a similar diameter and material should be of course the same ... electrocorsion can happen if not )

Please, calm down. Same problem, different approach, that's the good thing of a forum.

Also, if you don't have it yet, you may want an iron with temperature control for this kind of situation.

I'd just change the whole cable and the plug for a better one. Just like Baxter suggested. Klotz or Mogami cables aren't expensive. However, I don't care much about the plug since it doesn't make as much difference as a good, properly shielded cable.

It's interesting though how the thin cable on my AKGs still works after 20 years. Something fishy there. :)

I doubt we're dealing with AKG's here, though.

Then learn som basic electronics, grab a soldering iron and fix it yourself… it's called experience… we used to do it this way before the internet (and before cursing at people who are just trying to help)

    PS: phucku2

Before you buy new headphones, you should make sure that the cables are interchangeable.
