These stripped down versions only really come into play if your machine is low power border line able to run the OS. With a half decent modern computer (CPU & RAM) you won't see any advantage. A while back I followed every tutorial and stripped down WIN 7 of everything it could be stripped off, most of the services disabled etc etc and there was no noticeable improvement in performance. Even taking off AERO and all visual effects, which are supposed to be the biggest resource hog had, in reality, next to no effect - except that the screen looked more boring. Take my advice and don't bother SHRINKING your OS but try EXPANDING your machine>

 

Frankly I'm the same opinion. Modern computers are powerful enough to handle a bit of Aero or some background services. I'd rather have a complete system where everything will work as it should, rather then having problems when I want to install a new device, or just connect to a network. Imagine you work on such a system for months, and than you realize that your new midi controller is not recognized because you stripped an important system driver.

I can remember having tested a stripped down XP once which was not even able to print a document.

Well, define performance boost. A thoroughly tested boost, or a somewhat gut feeling boost?

If you really want a big performance boost in almost every respect, than invest in a SSD (and I mean: replace your complete standard HD with a SSD, not an HybridSSD solution).

I did some time ago, I'm 100 percent on SSD, my system and all my big libraries (Spectrasonics, NI, samples) reside on my SSD, that has already saved me countless hours I'm sure. VSTs load incredible fast, so do big Kontakt libraries or Omnisphere patches. Even bouncing tracks is faster (though writing on a SSD is not that fast then reading).

All those seconds staring at the Windows hour glass add up, you now. I'd never buy a computer with a standard HD ever. *no*

 

im talking about of windows services, themes, appearance, sound themes, uac, system restore, msconfig, energy saving, and all those tweaks together they free you up to 500 mb ram if not more ...let alone ssd's, those are another story ...if you tweak it nice it will load and perform quick ...u dont really need ssd's ...its enough 7200 speed hdd's

 

I think you are wishful thinking PLM. I did all the windows services, themes, appearance, sound themes, uac, system restore, msconfig, energy saving cuts on WIN 7 x64 and did not achieve anything like 500MB less RAM. You can check yourself with Task Manager both before and after. As all those changes you mentioned are reversible you can then restore all of them and check again. To achieve the kind of memory savings you mention you would have to chop away great chunks of the functionality with nLite or similar on installation and this would not be reversible if you suddenly found you needed something you left out. But anybody who has used SSDs will soon tell you they are literally ten times faster than mechanical drives and will far outstrip any tweaking. As to the longevity of SSDs?? Well that's an unknown quantity.....

 

Well, but 500 MB (if it is even that much which I doubt) is not much in modern machines, that's what I mean.

On a system with 1GB RAM ok, but with 8GB of it, I don't feel the urge to save it. I'd rather restart my Firefox then which can take up to 1,5 Gigs easily.

Sorry, but comparing modern state-of-the-art SSDs with 7200 RPM HDs performance wise is kinda nonsense.

Finanlly I don't care about that, if you feel the need to strip down, then do it, I'm happy that I don't have to do that (any more).

 

As others are saying - this Lite version only makes a difference if you are running a very low powered system. It'll save a bit of RAM and HDD space, but both of those are relatively cheap these days. There won't be any difference in CPU usage - by removing Aero you can actually increase CPU usage, as Aero is accelerated by the graphics card.

You can tweak all versions of Windows to make them use less memory by disabling services. You can lower DPC latency by disabling unused hardware, either in the BIOS or using Device Manager. Some things to consider are webcams, network cards, unused ports, card readers etc.

Saving hard drive space isn't really necessary, unless you're running a small SSD. I have found that disabling too many services can cause more headaches than it's worth. Some things will fail to install or work and you'll spend hours tracking down the problem, only to find that it depends on a seemingly unrelated service.

I have finally made the switch to Windows 8. I had sworn never to use it due to the ghastly interface, but I bought a new laptop and it came installed. I have replaced the default Metro interface with Start8 and disabled those weird corner charm things, and it's now just like Windows 7 with a few improvements. I would actually recommend it now, mainly due to the extremely fast resume - I open my laptop and it's ready to go almost instantly. And Explorer and Task Manager have a few improvements too.

 

I think people are afraid of change.
Technology is pretty cheap/advance from what it used to be 3-4 years ago.
Most computers usually come with a default 7200 hd n 6-8gb ram.

CPUs quad core/ duo core make also an important role on being able to run the program without hiccups.

I had suggest to just save a few months and upgrade than trying o find a solution o lack of ram/hd problem

I know economy is not at the best and might not be the option for everyone. It's just a better solution than dealing with tweaking windows specially if your not really good with computers and might backfire at you.
