well put, especially when talking about our first endeavors some of us didnt know that these tools even existed yet.
or worse, thinking that cakewalk was how it was done :mates:for me all i knew was 1) cakewalk, 2) freebie's like H.G fortune, and guitar rig. i was doomed! and didnt know it. but how many of us still recycle and canibalize our old grooves and ideas from those times?

Haha, I would like to have access to my first "musical" ideas, but actually I think my FL was the legit trial at that time, so I couldn't even save things... But your quote made me remember when I discovered the DSK free VSTs, with that I had access to "real life" instrument sounds, it was a huge discover for me at that time. Oh boy, how I had fun playing those instruments on my 256mb RAM/40GB HD Windows XP. Not even had internet at home, I needed to go to a Internet café to download stuff. Things were way more complex back them, but way simpler at the same time if that makes any sense. :)

People keep their earliest tracks? Good lord.

I conveniently lost the first year of my junk.

I do not regret losing my memories of using ACID PRO 4 and just randomly dragging loops like an idiot.

Yes back in the days we were much more creative by focusing just on music instead on production technique. Well here´s an example of that. I wrote a Drum And Bass track in 1999 using only a Yamaha SY85 synth with 8 tracks and 1 rhythm track. Then recorded to tape. After many years I converted it to mp3.

That is pretty cool! I started checking out some of your tunes on your page. I really liked Sins, and Empire.. these are fantastic tracks!! Seems you have taken a big break from music writing, though. Get to work! :)

Gave you some likes and follows on both my artist pages.

    My first recording.
Circa 1998 - 2 standard cassette tapes mixed together with resulting pitch / speed anomalies.
Each has overdubs x3 (rhythm box +rhythm guitar +lead Guitar).
    Likely mixed using early Cakewalk.
Casio guitar synth bossa nova rhythm (G10?) Boss SE-50 fx.
    Lord have mercy!

Yamaha SY85, looks cool! Didn't even know about that one. I'm amazed at how many Ensoniq Mirage/Korg M1 type units were made in the late 80s/early 90s that flew under the radar.

My first Song which was really finished was this Hard Trance track from 1996. I had just an Yamaha SY85 and created a melody with harmonies, basses etc. In the well known Club "Tunnel" in the City of Hamburg I met the Light Jockey who I gave my tape of the song. Next day he called me to produce the track together. Near by Hamburg we met in his studio and finished the track. Machines used: Yamaha SY85 (melodic sounds), ASR Sampling Keybord (drums and bass), Novation Bassstation (acid line), analog mixer, Atari or Cubase sequencer for all MIDI, some delay I don´t remember and a DAT recorder for recording the audio. I was very new to music production and overwelmed by all the gear in the studio. Also I had no idea about arrangment or anything else. So I only brought my melodies and harmonies. All the rest was done by him (arrangement, mixing, acid line) He was very professional in that time, he collaborated and remixed with quite a few top producers of that time in Hamburg´s Hard Trance DJ scene. After that I was infected to produce music.

So....more people have listened to my first poop from 15 years ago than the track I posted last month.

Well done to all those who braved the challenge.... even the awful ones had some naïve charm about them.
