I am deciding between the Sandisk one for 180€ and Samsung T7 for 235€. T7 has 1000 Mb/s reading speed while Sandisk only has like 500 Mb/s.
I mean one will take twice as long to load, but will it even be a big deal at this point when you start out with half a gigabyte per second reading speed?
Is the increased price justified or even neccessary? Whats your experience?

If you want to use it on realtime (in your project) go for Samsung definitely,
If it's just a back up storage then doesn't matter if you go with ssd or hd

Honestly, YMMV, because that's an SSD on USB3.2 (and is NVMe), but I had a standard drive on USB3.2 that was advertised at those speeds, and actual speeds were 140MB/s, which is basically a regular mechanical hard drive. The speeds are limited by the internal drive components. I was hugely disappointed when I noticed this and returned my USB 3.2 drive.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the max you will get, aside from when CACHE is used would be about 550MB/s. That means it would go really quick to a point, but once the cache is full, it will drop down to 550MB/s... which is still pretty good. You may be happy with that, just don't expect it to write constantly at 1000MB/s.

Someone else with an actual USB 3.2 SSD should confirm this, but this was my findings again with a standard USB 3.2 (non SSD). What they advertise is VERY misleading... but it depends on what you're transferring as to how fast that thing will read/write. Overall, it will still perform better than the other drive in the majority of cases.

TLDR version: The Samsung T7 will write at a fast speed until its cache is full (which looks to be 15GB for the 500GB T7), then it will drop down to a speed closer to the Sandisk. Probably still worth the extra money, unless you're always transferring huge files.

I use Lacie Rugged 4tb external hdd's and internal ssd's with my Macs with samples, audio tracks, etc and never have a problem with read speed off the Lacies. Maybe your needs dictate using external SSD, but for me it would be a waste of money or using smaller capacity drives.

My Budget Solution >> Crucial MX500 500GB + Sabrent External Case USB 3 with UASP SATA III Protocol...

This has decent transfer rates for a USB 3 case, but you should avoid constant writing with an SSD anyway. Your preselection with the external Samsung T7 etc is already quite good I think. But it makes little sense to use a normal USB 3.0 port to take an SSD with high advertised read and write "IOPS" rates at this price, with USB you always have limits. You will not be able to get more than 450 MB/s ~ out of normal USB 3.0. Of course, your USB 3 chipset also plays a important role on the PC side. The Samsung T7 only makes sense if you have a USB 3.1 port on the PC, then you get 800 MB / s - 950 MB / s netto speeds with the Samsung T7.

check stores for Samsung T5 deals - it will give that "only" 500MB/s speeds but price is often way lower than T7

@tzzsmk They only have 500Gb T5 Samsungs at my store :(
@Jeffrey_Goinz Did you pay 240€ for 400 mb/s reading rate? But that's what the Sandisk SSD does anyways and way cheaper.

Thanks for your suggestions, I still have no clue which one to get.
Will ask the guy working in the store and take the cheaper one because I felt like he wants to fuck me over :d

I have the T7 and can say im not dissapointed but would also not be if I had gone for a T5 equivalent saved the money.

Real world copy speeds only peak at about 700mb/s because of mainly data type limitations (e.g. songs take way longer than videos).

Peak speed at transferring large files was 700mb/s
Loading kontakt instruments is greatly improved but only when the library allows it (albion one loads superfast, but alicias keys is way slower - ballpark speed feels like 100mb/s for albion and 30mb/s for alicias).

NOTE: I don't think the T7 has a small cache which slows it down after a certain amount of Gb of transfer(either that or the non cache memory itself is super fast), because I have copied over 200Gb in one go and it stayed consistently at above 400mb/s (whereas my internal intel 660p 1TB will slow to 100mb/s after a 100Gb Transfer or more)

all in all unless you plan to use kontakt regularly or transfer large files the T7 isn't really that much better.

I myself am looking at a cheap nvme+enclosure setup for my next one (in a year) and don't mind if it has a small cache because as a musician I'm more concerned with read speeds than write.

    Hope this helps

PS might want to look at ordering online if it isn't available in store.

those cheap ones are USB 3.0 which caps the performance at around 600MB/s (which is 5Gbit USB 3.0 limit) - and fast thunderbolt seems too pricy for the fancy 20Gbit speeds

Ah okay, I just bought the 2TB version of that one and I bought it only for Opus libraries, will try it now.

But yeah honestly I REALLY don't wanna bring this one back to buy the T7 because that'd mean that only like 40€ are left for food :lmao:

turn on the disk warning on pop up toolbar on OPUS, and see if your drive is also getting slow, i hope yours will be ok.

Nope, like i wrote i choosed the Budget way for an External SSD! I dont think speed should be the only Priority, to have more space for the Money is much more important in my opinion! I only buy SSD's when they at Sale! And i have the speed comparision, because i also use an Patriot Viper VPN100 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD with 3000 MB/s Read and Writespeed attached on my Motherboard, which i also buyed at Sale with coupons etc. And Yes the speed is fun, but did you realy want to spent this amount of money or choose the Budgetway?

    Peace...

AKA Seagate. Absolutely identical hardware. Mac owners love to overpay for fancy cases.
