    Hi
I'm looking for a good cataloging freware soft to replace Cathy that does not work with win 10.
(Cathy was perfect for that, but I don't want to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) that would be the only way to make it work with win 10.)

I've tried VVV Virtual Volumes View, which seemed to be good, but I discovered that it was writing a catalog file on each scanned drive that is several GB for each, so it's a no go.

What I need is a very simple software able to store the names of what is inside any drive, because I have several external drives which I want to be able to search without connecting them.
I dont need preview of anything, nor fancy functions, just a catalog with the names of the files.

How about https://www.voidtools.com/? It has various options for sorting and searching (drives, kind of files, date, size, ...) and once it has scanned your drives it's fast as hell (instantaneously).

+1. One of the few programs that will not only show matching files but also the matching lines in each file.

To create the index file for a drive, use this command:

    dir /b/s X:\ > Drive_X_Label_Y.txt

Replace X with the drive letter and Label_Y with a more telling name.
Keep the .txt files on an SSD if you want your search results quickly.

    Thank you for your answer.
Yes I saw this one, but I'm not sure it can catalog external HDs.

    Thank you for your answer.
I'll try it, but if it's command lines only... I prefer an interface for dummies.

I only need a program to find is that Kontakt library's or this program installer. Very simple, I don't need to search inside the files.

    Thank you for your answer.
I didn't new this program, I'll check it.
Does it creates a database that can be searched after the drives are disconnected?

Put mfc100.dll" and "msvcr100.dll" into the Cathy directory.

I use filelocatorpro it also indexes externals they have a free lite version but I use the full pro, works on all windows up to Windows 11 similar to their agent ransack and they both work with any external drives even flash drives, I've been using filelocator pro for many years it works great

Exactly. "Everything" fits your purpose very well. Connect your drives, let it scan, untick option to remove data when drive disconnects and you're almost done. You can remove any unwanted data (like the recycle bin entries) from the list and you get your fast searchable list of all data.

Used "Everything". Its not actually accurate. Sometimes it won't show a file I know exists (created myself), its fast though

Yeah, alot of software you can just add the missing .dll to the directory and should work.

1)AgentRansack Free version is a Search Tool, it does NOT index

    2) the Paid version of AgentRansack/Filelocator Pro does Index. AgentRansack and Filelocator pro = same

    3) Search Everything Tool is a good tool to have on your computer. It will what you ask.

4)Filelicator Pro is good but you don't need it.

Never had such an issue. Can be tricky though if you have removable disks that are updated frequently, because you have to decide if you want accurate results = remove files from the list when offline or a general oversight = keep files in list when device is offline.

    In short: yes.
Very powerful app for a freeware. Check what's possible in the faq: https://www.voidtools.com/faq/

This can happen after a crash. You have to rescan your drives afterwards.

There is WinCatalogue, its on the friendly site.
    https://www.wincatalog.com/

    Win 10, 11 compatible.

Looking for a reliable and powerful disk catalog software to organize your huge collection of disks?

WinCatalog 2020 disk cataloger is a perfect solution! On the market since 2001.

Automatically create a catalog of all files, stored on your disks (HDDs, DVDs, CDs, network drives and other media storage devices): WinCatalog will automatically grab ID3 tags for music files, Exif tags and thumbnails for photos, thumbnails and basic information for video files, e-books, contents of archive files, thumbnails for images (pictures) and PDF files, ISO files, and much more.

Organize your file catalog, using virtual folders, tags (categories) and user defined fields, and find files in seconds, using powerful search, even when disks are not connected to the computer. Also easily use WinCatalog as a duplicate file finder. Your disk catalog can be automatically updated through Windows task scheduler.

You could also use Datacrow https://www.datacrow.net/ like i do for my personal calatog of stuff, which is very flexible but involves a huge learning curve and some wise decisions how to store your stuff - surely too much for your needs, but just to show off what's possible:

v1.5 is supposed to fix the "not finding a file that exists dumberto wrote
I have also ran across this issue a couple times.
and a number of other issues that I have noticed.
Nothing that bothers me, just wtf stuff.

Everything 1.5 will reconnect automatically when disconnected from the Everything Service.
