Ultra Short Sidechain

    Hello Guys,

    does anybody of you have an idea how these ultra short pumping sidechain effects on the bassdrum are done? Here is an example of what I mean:

    When the bassdrum plays, there is a very short ducking of all other instruments, I am a Cubase user and I call myself an advanced producer, but I spent 2 hours with the "Compressor" stock plugin in Cubase to archieve a similiar effect but came out with nothing, I dont get this short pumping sidechain fx...Could it be possible that "Trackspacer" is doing this effect?

    Anyways, have you tried faster compressors? I remember Cubase stock compressor being fairly slow back when I used it.
    Trackspacer is also fairly slow. It's not generally meant for pumping effects, freeing up space in a more transparent way instead.
    I know for a fact that Pro-C 2 is capable of such pumping with "Punch" algorithm and short release times.
    Provided you cut the cail from the kick drum, of course.

    that pumping effect is one of the worst things to happen to music in the last 20 years imho. i immediately turn off any music that uses it. it's annoying as hell.

    Just to confirm agreement with the first comment; Trackspacer does not do this, no.
    It helps with frequency masking.

    ok, thanks to everybody for the comments. I thought stock Compressor should be able to do this as long as I use the right settings.

    You can also set up another trigger pulse doing what your kick is doing, but just a shorter trigger than your kick, and use that instead to trigger the compressor.
    This is standard, really. You don't need to use the actual kick in your track...
    Way more versatile.
    Can use a synth with quick attack and little or no release!
    Also, a "sidechain" as mentioned in your title is used for many things; but you are specifically talking about sidechain compressor pumping.
    Maybe you will get more help regards the compressor if you change the title.

    I confirm, just a shorter trigger to drive the compressor.
    Take the attack of a snare or a rimeshot and cut the tail.

    A fast compressor with a very short attack and after you adjust the release for the effect you want.
    Fabfilter Pro C2 is ok for that.

    I recommand you a super fast compressor : FIRCOMP
    A real 0s for the attack, ultra transparent.... and it's free :wink:

    First of all, the effect in that track is not obtained with just one sidechain sender from the kick, but there are probably 2-3 different sidechain senders on different tracks, with different settings. Also, it is probably realised using Bus Groups receiving the sidechain sender.

    You can realize that pumping effect with cubase's stock compressors, the Standard or the Vintage one, probably this case is for the Standard.

    The trick is also in the sidechain sending track: transients and time

    -Use a sample track,
    so you can try different samples according to the sidechain effect you want: snares, HH, kicks are usual the best, but try synths as well, here you decide the sending transient. Keep in mind that in the Sample Track you can tweak attack, release of the sample, so it's virtually almost like tweaking the attack-release of the receiving compressor

    -make it with the same midi notes of the kick (or whatever you want as SC sender)

    -point its output to "no bus", basically you dont need to hear it, so dont send to true outputs.

    -go in the inspector and tweak the "track delay" to negative values, this will make this sample track to "play earlier", so the sidechain send will go some milliseconds earlier to the sidechain compressor being triggered. Experiments value here.

    when done, save this Sample Track setting as "track preset" so you can recall in all your projects during all your life as (more) advanced producer ;)

    you can also use a test tone. so it is just on and off.

    That's not fast.
    But you could highpass the sidechain input to make the compressor work faster (and not trigger on the lingering low-end of the kick). Heck, you can trigger with a ghost-kick (any transient/short sound that triggers) for ultimate control.
    I guess you can't call yourself an "advanced producer" just yet.

    yes i did, but like mentioned, its not fast unfortunately. I will try the Fircomp like Shankar said, its just 23pound and use an external trigger like a short closed HH.

    an easier and more precise way to do it is use a midi triggered volume shaper , or do it manually

    Ghost kick for sidechain: I thought it was my secret weapon, but it's not that secret after all ...
    Yes, I noticed that the kick tail interferes with the compressor release, delaying the reopening of the volume. That's why, in order to get the effect, I use a muted pulse signal instead of a kick
