Hello there! I recently found out by some guy on youtube about this technique. So Pink Noise reproduces the full frequency spectrum, the trick is letting the noise runing and levelling individual sounds (kick ,snare...) till the sweet spot where the Pink noise is just above the single tracks.

I tried it and it works fine with Headphones, it just gives you an idea about where to go.

pd: the video where I learnt the technique is this one ( As Amsterdam Pirate posted below)

Any of you tried this technique before?

    Thanks for reading.

I tried that before, gave quite good results to continue working from, especially when mixing kick and bass without good room conditions.

Hey y'all, how is this technique properly used?
I've found 2 youtube vids covering this technique but one [1] says you have to set the volume so that the sound is JUST noticeable through the pink noise, the other [2] sets the pink noise volume to -20db and mixes all tracks so that they're clearly noticeable through the pink noise… Below are the vids themselves, hopefully someone can give me some more insight in properly applying this technique *yes*

Thanks for sharing this, I had never heard of this before, very interesting!

    Peace from Amsterdam!

When I find a good tutorial, I try to share it, so people can go check it out. Reference points come in handy, but your ears still have to be the final arbiter. A lot of things come into play when you start mixing tracks together into stereo or surround besides levels and frequency spectrum. And speaking of video tutorials, I saw one once about vocal microphones, and his only real advice was-"Get a U-87" ---and to think I wasted all that time listening and comparing..... A wonderful mic, but I know that it is not the end all/be all for everybody's voice. So if you find a tutorial like that, just let it waste away out there somewhere.

Maybe I'm old style but it seems so boring and unmusical

I've been using this technique for about a year now and could not be happier. Neither one of those tutorials is exactly on point though.
It took a lot of trial and error starting from those points to find something that works for me but in 20yrs of making music that's the single best tip I've ever gotten.

It's one tool among lots of others, sometimes helpful, sometimes not. Takes me one minute to get the levels right, and then I go on refining.

Shake_puig thank you for the tip, but please share the video's link too.

Why no one answers Amsterdam Pirate's question?

Here's what I do: I almost always start with my kick around -12 db, then I do a rough mix by ear, with at least -6d of headroom. Then I solo my kick, insert pink noise, raise it to the level that my kick is slightly audible through the noise, then I balance the other groups (bass, synths, fx) that they are as well slightly audible. Turn off pink noise = nice balanced mix.

    Easy as that.

thanks for the info, it's good to know what's a general starting point for this technique because i've never heard about this at all, so thanks again!

Im saying the same thanks: mostly cos the pink noise itself represents a structured template, a graphic representation, of what a balanced mix should contain

I have never heard about this, but I am intrigued and I will most definitely give it a shot, who knows it might work out well for me.
