This is just a discussion seeing if you guys prefer using samples or not when you make sounds in things like synths that support sample feature.

Just a bit curious! I'm interested to see what the results might be.

 

Hi. Yes, I do. Marrying two samples from different side of the tracks is a match made in heaven. Samples I usually use as a scratch pad, but in the end, some of them will make the final cut.

I use primarily my own created samples though last might I used nice stereo samples of goats baying and cows mooing for a Christmas present in a short piece for a friend.

Edit...It wasn't cows, it was chickens.

I used to despise sample usage, to the point of forgoing wavetable synths that use .wav files and any IR processors. Synthesized everything. But then granular synthesis widened my perspective on sample usage. After a bit of time I made my peace with drum samples as well. Nowadays I even use some UJAM and XLN Audio stuff, IRs and lately Falcon (I know), but I still don't like Kontakt, Nexus, Omnisphere and the like.

 

It really depends on my mood.

I do prefer to use synths though for more control. I find with samples I hear a sample and try and make it work where as a with a synth I have an idea about what i want first.

 

Both are fine with me. I don't use sample packs that often but sampling a song, chopping it to bits and then making something out of that, it's beautiful. Not just that, but you can always layer some sort of synth underneath.

 

I use samples because I couldn't find a convenient drum synth (MODO Drum is close but still uses samples)

 

I mess a lot with breaks and stuff, even because the software I use make it so easy to deal with samples (renoise), so I end up using a lot of samples everytime.

 

Yes particularly sounds i can't create at home with my gear.

 

Yeah, Layering a texture sample on a pad patch for instance can make a night and day difference on the final sound. But it can go even further and have a purpose in the mix, like for example using short percussive sounds on the top of the synths or basses to accentuate the rhythm and make it easier to be noticeable on dense mix sections. But you can always use a dedicated channel in your DAW to do these kind of things and have even more control. That depends on your workflow really.
