    Hi,
Anyone using their sound library on a NAS?

I'm thinking of Nexus, Omnisphere, and Falcon. I have set up the NAS as a network drive, working like a standard hard drive in Windows. Using the NAS today as a media streamer but got tons of storage, so thought of why not utilize it.

I'm getting 116 MB/s speed with the NAS. Not as fast as my SSD's (500 MB/s), but decent enough for the listed sound library?

I think if storage is an issue, using your NAS might be a good alternative. Not sure about performance but if it works, why not?

I have a 32TB NAS I use for storage, mainly for movies, photos and client projects. I also have a dedicated 1TB SSD just for sample libraries which is nearly filled up but I limit myself to just that. I maybe use 10% of whats on that drive since I normally stick to the same handful of libraries when making tunes and although the idea of using my NAS for sample storage is tempting, I just dont see myself using anymore than what I already have.

Hmm. Sort of. Im using a 10gb connection with an 8-bay Synology setup. It's ok but you'll still need a few SSD's lying around for select libraries for use during specific projects. I keep around 30 TB's on the NAS and just transfer what I need to the SSD's as required.

That is, unless you like watching coloured wheels spinning for hours at a time.

Not going into details but if memory serves the maximum speed you will get with a 1gigabit connection is 125MB/sec

now a single hdd can exceed these speeds by alot, typical hard drive can reach 200/220MB/sec...

so do you think that will be enough for your workflow? i HIGHLY doubt it...

what i would consider or recommend to you is this, get an old pc with higher end motherboard with enough pci lanes to spare buy two of these and one of this and do the following,

one 10gig network card on your "master" machine, the second one plus the sata controller card on the second one, and don't forget to get yourseld a cat6 network cable, and make your own nas using the old machine, other than that good luck.

I do it quite the same. NAS is the source/backup and SSDs a kind of cache. I manage it with goodsync, so everytime I plug in the SSDs the files needed are copied to them and the files not needed are deleted from SSDs (but always remain on NAS)
The switching I do with symlinks. They don't care if a file is physically on the NAS or on an SSD.

But one must be careful. When I'm in a hurry i tend to become inattentive and then things can happen...

In real life not much more than 100 MB/s with big files and much less with small ones.
