FL Studio got good presets in FLEX - Essential Strings expansion. BBC Discover by Spitfire is quite often free (or always?).

Just asking, why do you ask for free alternatives? Why not uses cured stuffs instead?

    Use DecentSampler (100% free)
and load NSO Orchestral Swells (from PianoBook co uk, 100% free)

EDIT: NSO also have a Kontakt 5 version, also for free.

I wouldn't say it's VSL levels of AMAZING but I'm extremely fond of the old Edirol Orchestral VST. I still think it sounds fantastic, even to this day. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for Gamecube games.

    It's abandonware so have fun.

Better choice, imo, than all that was posted above you.
And I can juuust about remember that this made me buy the full version; although I still kept the Lite because it's so good!

They also make one of my fave pianos, @ 202.73 GB!...the Walker 1955 Concert D Full.
Although I still end up using The Hammersmith more...
And still nobody can show me a Falcon library that competes, yet...
Yet they are all swearing by it. :dunno:

Jesus, and I thought the entirety of the old GIGA VSL was too big. 200+GB for a single piano?

These people need to learn about FLACs.

The biggest out there is now 1TB.
The Hammersmith Pro is 51.73 GB. My most used.
The C.Bechstein Digital Grand is 25.88 GB and is beautiful!

Also, the 200 GB is in proprietary NI format too! hehe Not .wav

    There's a 1TB piano? Which? That's fucking ridiculous.

Not if you're a pianist, no.
    Why?

No, come on, that's ridiculous and you know it. Did they sample 127 velocity levels, damper & release resonance levels and hammer noises for EVERY SINGLE KEY?

Come on, you have to admit it's ridiculous. 1TB is outrageous even for an entire orchestra plus ""world"" instruments.

The Yamaha S700 samples in the S90ES only weighed about 53mb and yet it's one of the most pleasant and playable pianos ever. Technology has move on, yeah. But just like headphones, a good sample library is good forever.

Isn't NI's proprietary format just an encrypted container for .wavs?

Be aware almost all the free libraries for Kontakt require you to purchase a full version of Kontakt itself. Native Instruments charge people who make sound libraries (that show up in the Library and can be used in the free Kontakt Player plugin) a fee, so they'd literally have to pay NI to give you free sounds. Without the full version of Kontakt you'll be limited to 15 minutes (iirc) of demo, and then you'll have to close your DAW and open again to be able to hear any sound.

If you really need free, Spitfire LABS is free and has great sounds.

Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover can also be bought for $49 right now, or you can fill out a survey and get it for free after waiting 14 days:
    https://www.spitfireaudio.com/bbc-so-discover/application/login/

while it has no legato samples, it's still much better than garbage freeware VSTs or ancient software like Edirol

I seem to remember it is only the instance of Kontakt you have to reload, not the whole daw.

If you don't have enable/disable plugin options in your DAW, it means at least closing and opening the project again every 15 minutes.
