Given that Phrasebox is at it's core a glorified arp (and not particularly cheap), I was disappointed with the limited amount of presets they make available.
As you say, there are lots of randomisation possibilities but even when you lock these to a particular key, the output is often too quirky to be useable.

Good timing.. I see Phrasebox is on sale now on Plugin Boutique: https://www.pluginboutique.com/prod...9fNbkB_vqN9e9gWM1vP4iUMo1huq7nyhoCEUEQAvD_BwE

Going to pick it up, even though I haven't tried it yet. Pretty decent price for what it appears to do, and gives me an alternative to Riffer.. I think it is capable of doing at least one thing I find a little difficult to do in Riffer (or perhaps just understand how to.. maybe that feature is there).

It's not perfect, but some of the interface looks set up in a way I find pretty intuitive too.

    Off to buy!

EDIT: I should have read more of the posts here first LOL.. I thought it was a sequencer, like Riffer.. but nonetheless, I think I can make good use of this when comboing it with Scaler 2.

    Very useful thread!

One of the things I struggle most with is how to come up with variations of an already written melody or sequence or coming up with a B variation of the melodies I write. What would y'all recommend.

Let's not forget Tone Carver with tvArpgen - Mbiragen - Windchimes
He also made Nova3 well before Transition appeared.

Dude u might be so close, but u may not have realized what u r becoming. Through out history the most famous music are inspired by already existing pieces of musical work, like for example Classical music although a few of them are inspired by their predecessors. But this has gone to the point where crazy and stupid crap is getting the recognition rather then ones which deserves recognition.
I am not a music historian but u get the point. Not just music every creative work that humans make 95% percent of the times are inspired by something.

My opinion just don't give up looking for a way to make music YOUR WAY,

My Recomendation (which is appropriate to this thread) if u have already made a melody and u have existing midi either third party or self made through generators or urself and u r trying to fit that in 80% of the times they dont fit in either it will be in diff scale or just rhythm does not fit.
Now u can slice up the midi with a midi sampler like reMIDI and use Scaler to fit into scale, but reMIDI can only chop a midi, after this point dont just use the midi as is, try to change its shape reverse it invert it upside down (mirroring) these stuff can be done with Rapidcomposer, u can drag in midi and use variations there are a ton of them there( for more in depth of detail check their forums). The order of this process can be changed like inverting the midi and then chopping it...
If u just want variations for a melody still u can use Rapidcomposer, but remember not all results it yields will be helpfull but it can show u the way, if u feed the information correctly (ex: steps leaps, octaves, either u want only chord notes or scale notes)

Here are a few things for inspiration, they are by no means using these softwares (i dont know) but the idea is similar

    Now listen to this

I am a huge fan of Justice i know its a sample of Andy Clarks element of risk but look at the similarity, this may have been pointed out IDk

    Here is someting interesting

not sure of this 100% but there are theories not given much thought to it

An orchestration tool which splits or sends midi notes to tracks u assign, but its standalone only i guess.

For quick / simple chord progressions and melodies Captan plugins work the best for me.

I have found that it is possible to use Midi Madness with modulations to generate something interesting and evolving )

Scaler is awesome for theory and help with chord modulations.

Chtulhu is great because it has so many chord libraries)

Riffer is good only for riffs.

Never been able to get anything good from ReMidi/Phrasebox

Also what I have found is, when midi is generated, you as artist might have harder time to connect to that melody. Don't get me wrong, I love generative stuff and it could help to get tons of ideas from nothing. However, the best results I have got is when melody was just jammed (and then polished). And also best jam sessions I had while my girlfriend was in the shower, hope that helps someone, hahaha))

@MaxBass , I personally use Riffer for generating random sounding arps (plucks). Not the main "riff", but just filling out a tune. It actually does a wonderful job for that.

But reMIDI is just a Midi sampler, it just chops existing midi, but as i mentioned b4 this can be made use of by generating midi from any the tools u mentioned above and saving it in a folder, for later use with reMIDI and Scaler.

Not a generator, sampler or tool for song writing, but a great toolkit for all things MIDI to manipulate or tie it all together. Can be used as a VST. I have been using it for months and just starting to tap into the possibilities.
