After several Syncrosoft Cubase dongles were stolen from the studio I was kindly gifted an NFR Dongle by someone who worked at Turnkey Audio, it was fully loaded with at the time everything from Steinberg.
For a while it was very heavily guarded... that is until a year or so later when H20 took care of business!!

When the Nuendo and SX devs jumped ship from Steinborg and went over to Presonus to create Studio One I wasn't far behind migrating and forgetting about such over onerous protection methods. I'm happy to pay for my S1 licenses, between the two accounts that we have up to 10 instances installed around the place...

Everyone knows the plight of optimisation we all face with our DAWs, it's often the bane of our existence.
Screw protection which causes computational overhead, such an overzelous attitude towards piracy!

I say good riddance to elicener, I have more important use for my USB ports..

it's all this 'requires you' shit that gets on my cabbage.
Truly, the Customer was never King.

Be it IRL or online, I don't like people looking over my shoulder while I work, even if it is 'only' once a month.

    Just pirate all they release.
    They deserved it.

They should offer all Nexus2 owners a stripped down version of Nexus3. No fancy preset management. No proper arp-editing and not compatible with new expansions. But at least, something that works without eLicenser.

If a company forcably inserts a USB dongle into one of my computer's orifices I consider that rape.

A.) It was a desperate programmer's self-defense to take action against crackers. he did everything in his power to save his company.

B.) It was a criminal computer break-in by a foreign power, a la NSA and other organized computer crime groups.

Even worse if a company forces you to do so yourself. That's rape plus extortion:rofl:

    a novice questions:
From now what to do in managing licenses on Ilok.com ?
Should someone transfert all licenses to USB Dongle for existing vst and plugin software?
Because of remaining activations of 3 on ilok.com; will it be lost ?

Ilok and elicenser are completely separate, one does not affect the other.

You better leave everything on your computer!

1.) Important: The license transfer in the other direction - from the USB-eLicenser to the Soft-eLicenser - is unfortunately not possible. As soon as a license has been transferred to a USB-eLicenser, there is no way back for it on the hard drive. This means that the USB-eLicenser with the transferred license must always be connected in order to be able to use the corresponding program.

2.) "The iLok and Steinberg Key are NOT the same.
They are different products that provide the same purpose - copy protection. They are not interchangeable though.

You need to purchase an iLok, which is then supported by the www.iLok.com site.
The Steinberg Key is an eLicenser product... http://www.elicenser.net/en/home.html
Most USA companies use iLok and most European companies use eLicenser.

Yeah, they sent the "offer" to upgrade. I went to check the link to see if it might be some nominal fee like 20 bucks, fuck that, it is 249 for this "special offer"

Make sure you understand the difference between eLicenser and iLok. This thread has nothing to do with one of them.

But.. like any sort of digital system... keep backups... and never in the same location. So if you have three licenses available... may I suggest:

    1- on a physical iLok
    2- on a physical computer
    3- up in the cloud

    Bonus...

4- make sure there is an r2r release.

this is the biggest problem with licensing schemes imho. by getting rid of elicenser, will the new protection schem also get rid of the computational overhead like r2r does with many of their cracks?

    No, Idon't think so.
In Steinberg's software, masses of queries to the dongle are distributed over the code. It is not checked only once whether the license is valid, but again and again.
So the Steinberg programmers will probably initially adjust the code so that the function that currently queries the dongle will in future check online whether the license is valid.
At least until the code is optimized over time, I think that will take longer than calling the dongle function and subsequently the software will be (a little) less responsive.
