Ableton was considered an outsider DAW back in 2001, there was an article about the history of Ableton - since its 20 years old official this year. Was released on 30. October 2001 to public.
But this was due to its Live orientated nature, not to its GUI.

IL had to create vectorized GUI, otherwise they had kept the original skin. Also a lot of stuff in FL was bmp based - yes you could skin FL very easy, which was just awsome.

Haha i still remember vividly the audio player by Lycos - Sonique <3 I love this played.

replaced it by Winamp, before winamp became bloated and CPU hungry. And now im using AIMP with its ancient v2 or v3 skin.

Ahhh and the windows xp song <3

Ableton dropped in 2001? I thought it was like '03 or '04. Damn Ableton's a veteran now too.
I miss those days. This thread is giving me those XP feels.

I still use Winamp today, I remember spending a lot of time looking for skins (skins for everything tho, XP, Yahoo Messenger, everything that supported skins). I remember the FL Skins too, I think IL will add a skinner for next FL major version, not too sure tho.I do miss XP, have a old PC that can run XP but the HDD started to make a high pitched noise and it's bothering me lol.

virtual machine might be a solution?

Yeah everything had a skin back in the days. To escape the grayness of Windows and Mac at the time (althought makes AQUA theme was coming up in 2002ish i think). Special time, everbody will this say about anytime ...

Thought about doing a XP machine with Hyper-V since it comes with Win10Pro and is made by Microsoft

While Hyper-V is undoubtedly the best solution of virtualizing Windows (at least 7+ onwards), the management tools are geared towards server administrators, and you have to set up your networking yourself.

VMware is in my opinion the superior solution for desktop usage, or even VirtualBox, and these let you virtualize other OSs easily, though this might not concern you.

Also let's don't forget: Voxengo and Tokyo Dawn Labs still develop their plugs with WinXP compatibility (including such famous units
    as Molot GE and Limiter6)

Speaking of retro, Microsoft has ported the original Windows 3.0 File Manager to modern systems.
