can guitarists also play in half time (without thinking about drums?) how would a guitarist do half time without thinking of drums?

or is it meant to be just for drums

(as all the other insturments will follow the drums beat)..

It's like asking if guitars can play quarter notes instead of eight notes, and so on: of course. It's not bad to ask questions, though make sure to spend at least equal time just practicing and experimenting so you can grow. Only by doing stuff you get better.

 

but how can you make it feel half time on guitar?? just by accenting the third beat whatever that note is on the riff you're playing?

Every rhythmic contour is possible for any instrument.

You can have any instrument " layer "

Half or double ( 2 multiplier )

There is also tons of other options.

Like for fun try 3 instead .

Let's say your tempo
Is 120 bpm

If you compose a 60bpm guitar part
It will accomplish what you are wondering .

 

A rhythmic feel with the accents adjusted to make it seem half the tempo. It splits four beat bars (1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -) into eight beats (1 - & - 2 - & - 3 - & - 4 - &) and changes the accents from the 2 and 4 to the 3 and 7, doubling the gap between them. This allows musicians to change the tempo of a song without affecting the overall time signature.

 

it doesn't work like that, as a guitar player for 20 years I can assure you half-time guitar doesn't work like that. That is just halving the tempo, half-time is just the "feel" of the part/phrase/riff but the tempo remains at original speed. It's kinda tricky for guitar and involves certain type of strumming or picking, with strong (accented) hit and weak hit plus different counting (than usual) like @Lois Lane mentioned above. Also need to be clever to create some illusion to trick the listener on the part's composition, the keyword to pay attention like @Lois Lane mentioned is "seem half tempo" but not half tempo.

Composing the guitar part at half of the original tempo will just bring down the song's feel to the downtempo teritory, and everything will start sounding weak.

And you are playing normal time .
To go into a half time section you are just treating it as if the tempo is 60bpm for that part .

( meaning you still construct the lines,licks, or riffs
In a normal way you would in terms the accents and the melody )

A guitar part in 120bpm ( halftime )
Compared to
A guitar part in 60bpm ?

My answer is there are no differences between those two .

The same for doubletime .

Halftime means cut the tempo in half .
Double time means double the tempo .

that's the beauty of guitar my friend, it is the easiest instrument to learn, anyone can play guitar, but the hardest shit ever to be good at.

 

dude if u can carry out a tune u're fine!! unless you want to be the best soloist or something...also playing live ok is another story...

lol, solo is the simplest thing about guitar man, putting a rhythm section that is so infectious that made the guitar solo can be played beyond the limitation of music theory is what I'm talking about. As an example Depeche Mode a band that everyone knows, the rhythm section is godllike because they can play their own Mode, such as playing all the chords in Minor even it suppose to be Major according to the theory thus enabling the vocal (considered as solo as well, if you know what i mean) to go crazy and sing his heart out ignoring all the rules.
