Just downloaded SoundsPaint + the free piano from 8Dio.

Spitfire Audio has their own player you can test via free LAB libraries.
Orchestral Tolls have Sine Player also with a free limited demo library.

And now 8Dio with SoundPaint.

I must confess that I have spent less than an hour testing SoundPaint but here is my preliminary experience:

-The interface is reasonably sober - but not a beauty. It is easy to find your way around the various options it offers.
-Playability is ok but the cpu is up to 30% on some of the presets you can choose from.
-The free piano is not my cup of tea but it's probably just me.

Overall considerations - and perhaps in fact my purpose in writing this:

SF, OT and now 8Dio seem to be leaving the NI Kontact platform - who is it really good for .... them or you?

NI Kontact is an open platform where everyone (in theory) can participate, create and publish their own audio libraries ..... this is hardly the intention with SF, OT and 8Dio's new initiatives.

What do you think?

The problem I have with these other sample players is they don’t allow for nearly as many customizable options as the Kontakt player’s edit tabs

 

you might be very suprised by this one then. ofcourse its a player so you can't add own samples but the editing is deep for a player

NI Kontakt is not really an open format, it's in fact a proprietary format. The trouble is: if you are not an owner of the full version of Kontakt, you are pretty much excluded from the Kontakt universe. Only very few libraries work with the free Kontakt Player version since the developers who want to publish a Player version of their library have to pay a considerable fee afaik. So, using a Kontakt library, no matter whether it's a free or commercial release, necessitates buying full Kontakt first, unless it's one of these rare Kontakt Player libraries!

I don't think it's ideal for every developer to come up with their own proprietary sample playback engine, since as users we now have to deal with redundant sample players (ideally: one playback engine that covers commercial, as well as free libraries, but this is utopia). But it's the only viable alternative for them to Kontakt: the developer can thus circumvent NI's restrictions and make their library accessible to non-Kontakt users as well.

Developers could also use free and open formats like SFZ and Decent Sampler, but then they would have no copy protection and their libraries could be freely shared by anyone, which is not what a commercial sample library developer wants.

 

I´ve never said Kontakt is a free and open source - it´s surely not,
but if you buy a copy, you have the options to script and manipulate your own sounds as it suits you.
It's a bit like when you buy your own car then you also have the option to modify it as it suits you .... but it obviously requires that you are willing to pay.
